If a (magic) book (collector's item) is plastified with adhesive plastic, does that lower its value? Is there a member 'in the know' about this? Thanks!

Andy Greggit (hope I spelled that correctly, but I probably didn't) is a bookseller, he could probably tell you more.

Hi Delimbeau, My name is Ian Luke, I'm a new member here so this is my first ever post! Let's hope I can help you with this one so at least my first post is a useful one
I've been collecting historical magic ephemera for years and I buy and handle a lot of text books. Sadly yes I'm afraid if the cover has been plasticised or laminated then it would have a substantial effect on any value. Often times people cover the books in clear plastic to protect it thinking that it will be worth more in years to come if they sheild the cover from wear & tear, this is a commonly held misnomer. The value in an antique/vintage book is its completeness, dust jacket, binding, title pages & tightness of inner binding, plus of course the general cleanliness of the volume. The minute you add or take away anything from the volume you substantially effect its value. Mind you, if you have a particularly old or rare printing of a book then collectors will make exception based solely on those criteria and the 'find me another' factor. IMHO I would say that if you can afford it buy it, if you're selling just be patient the right buyer will come along eventually whatever the condition I hope this helps Ian |
