Wow, this thread has really devolved.
Danaruns, I am truly sorry for your loss. Also, I would like to point out to the thread's creator's defense that this was created several days before Daryl's tragic passing, and I'm sure was meant with no disrespect towards the subject of suicide. It just looks like it is is poor taste due to the close timing. SoyMilky, I don't know what you're going through right now, but others are mourning the loss of a close friend, mentor, and someone they looked up to. Attacking people like that probably isn't the best of ideas. I'm sorry if you're somehow offended by other's pain. |

Thank you jljones83 for your comment. You are very kind.
I do not plan to respond to SoyMilky's long, boring, and insulting comments. Daryl was my good friend, as he was to many, evidenced by the many responses of friends and acquaintances on innumerable threads. I know that I won't forget him.

SourMilky, I didn't say anything when you were attacking Mr. Schneider in another post; but now you are giving Mr. Oslund a hard time. Do you know who these people are???? You, like myself, are fairly new to the world of magic. Despite the fact that I'm sure that you pride yourself in being an iconoclast, it would be nice if you showed a bit more respect towards those who have a lifetime of magical experience to share.
To the original poster: It's called getting back on the bicycle. Our minds like to replay our worst experiences over and over and over. I had trouble sleeping last night because I kept thinking about a parental mistake I made. We just have to try and let the bad experiences go. Every day is a new day with new hope and new possibilities. |

Not too long ago there was a Café' member that commited suicide. I remember reading his posts. Some of the respondents
were sensitive while others were not so nice in responding to him. We don't know where people are emotionally and to triavilize or make insensative comments ( drama queen) should be avoided. How many young and older insecure people commit suicide because of what we think is insignificant. ( a relational break up or feelings of inadequacy etc.) Or maybe failing a magical performance that is vitally important to that person. Should we have to change a "Thread Title" because of unfortunate and tragic unrelated circumstances? I think not. That "title" Is how the OP sincerely felt and we should answer his questions and concerns in a caring mature manner as many have.
Guilt will betray you before technique betrays you!

Youth doesn't own all the passion, and age certainly doesn't own all the wisdom. I like to think Daryl sat somewhere in the middle, and would have tried to help the original poster genuinely and compassionately, without turning it into all about him. Perhaps we could all consider doing the same. |

ToShareIsLove: I only read part of first page of this thread, so I don't know what everyone else posted, but here is my advice:
If I mess up I say "I MEANT TO DO THAT!!" And it gets a Big laugh. Especially since they don't know what I am going to do in the first place. Then I move on. A lot of times mess-ups fly right past an audience. Of course I don't perform unless I have several routines ready, so I can switch gears quickly to something foolproof. If I accidentally drop something I say "If this works it will be real magic as it is surely not skill." LOL Then I do the foolproof trick I always carry with me. They are not knowing what you are going to do in the first place. Sometimes I can just finish the trick I started with non the wiser. If something is not working, like the palm, switch gears and do something else completely different. Don't do the palm. Pull the card out and have it signed, or if it is signed, have someone else sign it just in case. Or say you forgot to have them put the date on the card. That might give you time to regroup and get it right the next time. Or just go into an ambitious routine or anything else you know. I do walk around close up magic and sometimes I have people walk up on the side or back of me. When I get to a critical part where they might see something, I turn my whole body either away from them or toward them until the angle is perfect. I would not worry too much about the video. The person that took it might not have put it out there. And if it is, you will probably never meet anyone that has ever seen it. I will allow anyone to video me. I don't think I ever saw any that I did not specifically ask them to send me. You could always contact the person that took the video and ask for a re-do. You could promise to do another better trick for her. But I would probably let it go. A few more points: Every once in awhile a person tells me exactly how I do something. I just say, that is not how I do it, and they look confused and take my word for it. Yes, we are paid to lie.LOL Get back on the horse and in the saddle and keep on performing. That is how you get good. Never pass up an opportunity to show someone a trick. In time you will learn what works for you and what does not. Remember: YOU are in control. Don't let someone else take control. I have a set show that I can change and adapt as I want. I was at an airport with a group of musicians. We were all traveling to the same gig. They wanted to see a trick. I pulled out my cards. Immediately one of the youngest guys starts into me in not a nice way wanting to shuffle and examine my cards. I just slowly put the cards away. I said "I have a set routine. If you want to see it, let me do my thing." Everyone else asked that I do it, so I did, and the guy said nothing else. I did not think of it but I should have said I don't take away and examine his musical instrument when he pulls it out. Yes, I can hand out the deck, but I don't let anyone set the momentum of my routine. And at paid gigs I will used a borrowed deck, but no one ever has one. If I get someone concerned about the deck, I tell them at the end of the night they can have the deck. I open a new deck for every show. I hope some of my thoughts help. ACE

The German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche said “That which does not kill us, makes us stronger.”
I believe Arnold Schwarzenegger also used the phrase in the first Conan film, so you know it must hold some weight.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

By your title I thought you did something seriously wrong and made a mistake while sawing someone in half. Don't sweat the small stuff.
If I were to agree with you. Then we would both be wrong. As of Apr 5, 2015 10:26 pm I have 880 posts. Used to have over 1,000

Among the things he experienced were being shot, being run over by a tank, being struck by lighting (while he was asleep), having his nose cut off, diabetes, obesity, etc. He had a very interesting life. I recoined the phrase in his honor--"That which does not kill you hurts a whole lot!" HLT |

Just to focus on the shame/embarrassment aspect rather than the whole suicide thing:
I'm a hyper-sensitive guy. I feel things like fear, guilt, embarrassment, regret etc very acutely. So I understand where you're coming from. The bad news is that magic requires a lot of social courage and moxie. You must be able to lie, fool, entertain and manage the public all whilst doing manually dextrous things with your hands, remaining aware of surroundings, and recalling a variety of processes and information. Epic self-confidence, indeed a rather inflated ego, is often part and parcel of performing magicians - and seems a basic requirement for showbusiness, natural authority and charisma (along with a fair degree of selfishness, inability to be embarrassed, and monomanic focus on the art). In short: magi are best served by a ballsy attitude, a big ego and a lot of chutzpah. The good news is that these character traits are likely, to some degree at least, malleable. It seems highly likely that by adopting a range of 'tools' (behaviours, processes, etc) you can make yourself less easily embarrassed, more able to bounce back from failure, more emotionally resilient and so on. The other bad news is that these techniques and processes are themselves probably hard work, expensive, require talent and support, and are time consuming. Other than that ... Dunno. Join the club of failed, self-hating magicians? At least magic is still fun. |

Just contact the person that filmed it and explain your mistake, edit the footage and let it be seen....its what most of the limited ability tv magicians do anyway to make themselves look good
