After some help in getting started, I found Article on Thimble Magic, Compiled by Doug A at http://magicref.tripod.com/magref/artthimble.htm
The set with the ribs and over sized final thimble appear to have been made by Sam Berland. Still looking for a lead on the smooth red set of 8. The site also shows the same metal set, including the cut out thimble. No maker indicated, but there appears to be at least two sets of these. So no I know I have a Vernet set, Fakini set w/over sized final production, and a Sam Berland set w/over sized final production. I'll keep digging for the origin of the others.

The problem is Thayer, Owen, Abbott's all made the red thimbles with ribs.
Sam Berland did sell the same kind, who made them for him is anybody's guess. The green plastic thimble was made by Werry in Germany. The metal ones may be standard thimbles sold at most sewing fabric stores. In some books those cut thimbles have been described. P&L made a couple metal thimble trick and their thimble holders were for the metal thimbles, and painted red. I never seen the red smooth sided thimbles before. These could be home made or thimbles made for hobbyist that paint thimbles for home decoration. I purchased a plain wood thimble once, but it was to thick walls for manipulation purposes. There was while in 1980 when Berland passed away, and wooden thimbles were nowhere to be found. To my knowledge there is no hallmark ever placed on thimbles, so if you do not have instructions then there is no way to tell who made them. Berland also sold a Jumbo thimble set with instructions for a while. I got a set back in the 1970's, never seen then since. To my knowledge my Owen Catalog says they made wood thimbles in different sizes, that is the only place that offered different sizes I wood. Owen Magic also owns the rights to Thayer Magic. So it could also be from this purchase of the Thayer business. There was only a limited number of magic manufacturers in the from the 40's to the 1970's so it should be one of them. Occasionally, German made metal magic was imported or brought back by magician who traveled to Europe. |

Those smooth sided red thimbles could be Owen's or Thayer. I the old days they only gave illustration drawings, that may or may not be accurate to the product. My Owens catalog book only shows one ring around the thimble a little past half way down the thimble body.
D. Robbins Novelty Co. in New York, sold the Sam Berland Thimble routine that came with a plastic shot glass. Robbins was known to commission large quantities of products to be made to get the best price for their wholesale company. It is anyone guess if they have a warehouse full of red wood thimbles, as they have been selling that effect for over 60 years. I am speaking of the ribbed at the top wood thimbles. |

I am a member of thimble Collectors International and writing an article about Thimble Manipulation. I have a large red wooden thimble with the ribs at top. Wondering if you could tell me how this thimble was used in a trick? Not a magician just wanting to enlighten a lot of thimble collectors about the process. Thank you for any information that you are able to give me.
