The Hype:
Jorge Garcia, better known to many as "The Jack," has performed and lectured in over 20 countries.

He's a regular face on television in his native Argentina and has also performed at the world famous Magic Castle no less than 6 times!

On his first DVD, The Jack shares 8 of his favorite and most powerful Mentalism creations and performance pieces, including To Lovecraft, Jorge's brilliant and acclaimed version of the classic Pegasus Page effect.

Each effect is performed in front of a live audience and later joined by Peter Nardi. They dissect and explain every effect in great detail back at the Alakazam studio.

It's time for you to Meet The Jack!

Routines Include:

To Lovecraft - This is The Jack's awesome take on the classic Pegasus Page effect. The great thing about the Jack's version is that you get to give the book away at the end!!

L-Mental - The Jack predicts the outcome of a three-person game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. This effect packs so small, yet plays sooo big.

Project Fear - Using your abilities as a mind reader, you manage to tap into your spectator's innermost fear

A Think and Stop Card Trick - This is The Jack's go-to impromptu effect. Perform it with any shuffled deck. No memory, no set up and no sleights!

One Head - Another effect that packs small but plays huge! A multiple prediction effect that's a sure-fire winner!

Blindfold Act - An awesome 5-minute routine using nothing more than a real blindfold and a deck of cards. Jack's Blindfold act has multiple phases that get increasingly more impossible.

Mind Track - This is a favorite concept on the DVD. It is totally impromptu and can be used for many different revelations!

Haunted Key -
The Jack's take on this classic plot is mystical and touching. A perfect way to evoke emotion from your spectator. This one effect could actually change their life!

As a bonus, on the DVD you will also receive PDF downloads of many of the routines, so you can print them off and learn them anywhere!

My Take:
The first thing that is obvious when you start up the DVD is that English is not Jorge's native language and they are very up front about this. It does affect his timing and his impact performing in English. I think he is much more powerful performing in his native language. But once you get past that, there is some very clever and powerful mentalism at work here. In addition to the DVD, you can download a pdf explaining some of the tricks and also how to construct a couple of the gimmicks needed to perform the effects. The pdf is nicely illustrated and a great addition to the package but there is one problem. One of the gimmicks requires that "special something extra" which the pdf says is included. It wasn't but you should be able to locate the needed item without a lot of trouble.

As I am sure most of you are aware, good mentalism quite often is much more expensive than magic. This does have a tendency to make the effects more exclusive to those who are serious about their work as opposed to curious amateurs. However, this is a group of strong mental effects (a total of eight effects) which is priced at the low end of $30.00. This does not mean that it is not good. It is obvious that the package is a retrospective of Jorge's life work and if you do mentalism, you will find something here to add to your act. Every effect can be done by performers of pretty much any level. There is no knucklebusting, no billet switching, no tedious memorization.

I am just going to hit a few of the effects that interested me. "One Head" is what else? A one ahead routine. All of us are familiar with the technique and are always looking for the force. I once saw Paul Gordon kill a room full of magicians using his one ahead "Muldoon Match". The same thing happens here. You will not catch the technique. It is totally hidden and when you are done, you are set up for the next performance. How much better could it get?

"Project Fear" draws on the works of Annemann and Becker. You are taught how to build the necessary gimmick which does all of the work for you and could be incorporated into a lot of different scenarios. Limited to your imagination.

"To Lovecraft" is a very clever book test. I love the technique and you can give the book out to your volunteer as a souvenir after the performance thus proving no "Monkey business" took place. I love "Mother of All Book Tests", but I realize it is beyond the financial capabilities of a lot of performers. This will allow you to do a powerful book test with a simple trip to a thrift shop to pick up some paperbacks plus it sends your spectator home with a memory. This should play very well for you.

My favorite effect on the disk is "L-Mental". I have seen various rock, paper, scissor routines lately. Seems as the if the plot has become very popular. Most of the routines use the liar, truth teller gambit explored by Lewis Carroll 'a long time ago. Mark Elsdon did a wonderful routine using the Free Will Principle. Jorge approaches it from a different angle that I just love. His version will play for both closeup and stage. It all depends on how large you would like to make your rock, paper and scissor cards. This is a totally deceptive method that makes perfect sense once you get into it. I would recommend that this is thoroughly rehearsed as it might get a bit confusing but once you have it down, you will have a piece that you will use. And this is one you can stretch out if you need a time filler. Great stuff, Jorge.

When I first watched "A Think and Stop Card Trick", I realized that I had previously learned it as Geoff Williams "Devastation". Jorge did add one little tweak to it that I liked. A little further research told me that the principle had been around for quite a while. "The Three Pile Trick" in Hilliard's Greater Magic by Carl Jones. Sal Piacente's "4, 5, 6 Packet Trick" and even Card College One had a similar trick by Paul Rosini. But even though the trick is not original with Jorge, it is still a terrific trick that belongs in your performance. Many years ago, I attended a Docc Hilford lecture at Hank Lee's and absolutely fried the other attendees with this one at the break.

Conclusion: You get eight terrific routines for thirty bucks. Take a look at the advertising for the new stuff. You can easily pay much more than that for one item. All the effects can be done by any performer. Each and every one is thoroughly explained and the pdf is a nice back-up which should answer any questions you might have. If you only get one routine to add from this disk, you have already gotten more than your money back but I think you should get multiple things you can (and will) use. Once you get past the language barrier, you have unlocked some powerful mentalism. This needs to be on your shelf. Highly recommended.

I also agree with the previous post and add that Jorge Garcia is a man to watch out for; his mentalism in some areas as well as his dapper dress code is comparable to our own Derren Brown.

The DVD is terrific value and for anyone wishing to gain a good foothold in the art of mentalism it is highly recommended.

The Book authored by Jorge "7 Mysteries" which sadly is out of print is also a worthy investment. While there is some overlap in effects performed on the DVD there are other gems within this alternative media format.

The writing style and graphics is very refreshing with some very good inside knowledge and words of wisdom to enhance your performance.

I am sad to share that I just received an email from Pablo Amira in Chile to say that Jorge has suffered a massive heart attack and has died. I did not know Jorge really well but he made a lasting impression on me when I had the opportunity to spend several hours with him a couple of years ago. I became an instant fan. He was quick to make you feel as though you were good friends and we had such a fun time time as he shared and performed some of his favorite effects. He will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family and worldwide friends.

I echo your words foretold and feel that Jorge had a lot more to offer the Mentalist community.

HE will be very much admired for his work and I am glad I had the opportunity to know him through his work all be it briefly.

REVIEW: Meet The Jack by Jorge Garcia and Alakazam Magic
RATING: 9 out of 10!
FULL REVIEW: Meet the Jack by Jorge Garcia is an Alakazam project in which Argentinian Mentalist, Jorge Garcia performs 8 mentalism and mind reading routines in an intimate parlor setting and then explains the secrets to every part of his act. The Jack, as he was known, shares some real gems and I highly recommend this project. Unfortunately, the Jack prematurely and tragically passed away a few months ago in April 2017. There is no better was to honor his memory than to learn from him. I did not know about the Jack before this DVD and I now mourn his loss.

The DVD is an hour and forty six minutes and is divided into two sections. The first are the performances and the second are the explanations. The performances take place in a small ornate room with dark curtains, candles, an hourglass, stained-glass windows and bookshelves in front of a small live audience. During the explanatory section of the trick, Garcia explains and credits the history of each trick along with Peter Pietro Nardi. They discuss how to perform the trick, brainstorm a bit about various ideas and most importantly teach you the secrets. Some of the tricks require homemade gimmicks and you are informed how to create the gimmicks.

The ad copy accurately describes the 8 routines so I will address a few of my favorites here.

To Lovecraft is a version of the Pegasus Page effect. Here the performer riffles through a book and the spectator stops him at a certain page. There is no force of a specific page. An envelope is used as a bookmark and to mark the page and the spectator chooses a word from that page. Amazingly, the envelope contains a handwritten word inside which matches the spectator’s chosen word. When the spectator then opens the closed book to the selected page, it is missing — it is torn out of the book. The torn-out page then appears inside an envelope that the spectator has been sitting on the entire time. The rips on the torn-out page is compared to the rips in the book and it is truly the exact page. The book can then be given out to the spectator as a souvenir.

Another favorite of mine was L-Mental. In L-Mental, 3 spectators are sitting on chairs behind the Jack and truly out of his sight. They each take an envelope with an image; either a rock, a sheet of paper or a scissors. The spectators continuously change seats and sheets of paper and the Jack is able to divine who would have won a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors every time. At the end, he removes a prediction which accurately predicts who wins the final round. This trick is so fooling and so amazing and so simple! I cannot wait to try this!

Project Fear is a great routine in which a spectator writes a phobia of theirs on a business card and places it onto a stack of business cards each with a different phobia written on it. When the spectator concentrates on what they fear, the Jack is able to read their mind. This is a great trick and requires some minor arts and crafts work and the purchase of some things to make the trick work. It reminds me of a lottery prediction effect that I perform. The arts and crafts work is simple and this is a great trick because you are asking someone to think about their greatest fear. Very evocative and impactful.

The Jack also performs a few card tricks which are worthwhile. I particularly enjoyed A Think and Stop, which you can perform with a shuffled and borrowed deck. Its origin is from the classic magic book, Greater Magic, and it is easy to learn and perform.

The DVD also comes with a 44 page PDF that contains excerpts of the performed routines from Garcia’s book, 7 Mysteries. The PDF is excellent and I will soon be looking for a copy of 7 Mysteries for my library. At the time of the writing of this review, the DVD retails for $30.

This is a great mentalism DVD with 8 very strong routines that anyone can perform. This purchase is a fantastic value.

This mentalism DVD is available at your favorite Murphy’s Magic dealer.
