Has anyone out there read the above titled book? Looks interesting but I'm curious as to how specific it is. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks......Scalito |

Are you referring to the J.C. Sum book? Not sure what type of specifics you would be looking for.

That's the book Blair. Can you build illusions from this book or is it just an overview of 'over 100 illusions'?
thanks |

Hey there,
There are no plans in the book, however it is very well illustrated with photos and a short description of each illusion. But I found the photos quite small for what they were showing ie. the staging of an illusion. The vast majority of the photos are 2"x3". I was also expecting the book to be a similar size to J.C.'s books on building illusions. It is 6" x 9" and 270 pages. As a book on becoming an illusionist, and giving an overview of what is required, it is a worthy addition to a library. Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

Thanks Blair.....Maybe one of his other books would be better? I'm looking for a book/plans that would show how to build some effective illusions that are not very expensive. Sort of like the Girl from the Light or King Tut from Tarbell.
Thanks....Scalito |

They are a bit dated, but the Paul Osborne books (Illusion Systems) are really good. Illusion Systems 1 goes into a lot about how to begin building your own illusions, tools you will want, etc. And includes plans for several easy to build illusions (Costume Trunk, A great version of Cutting in Sixths... etc.).
Have you taken a look at Jim Steinmeyers books... some of his illusions are easier to build than others but the plans are extremely professional. I took his plans to a furniture builder and got a great Houdini's Rope from his plans. If you are going to invest in Illusion Books.. Steinmeyers really are the best by far. |

You would have to define......"not very expensive". This means very different things to different folks. Also where you plan to use the illusions.
I would second building a library of Osborne Books (I have the majority) and his plans. As far as J.C.'s books, while the illusions can be very effective, the cost to build are relatively high. This is assuming you would have all the metal work/welding etc. done by someone else. But again his books are very good and a worthwhile investment. Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

The true answer to "How To Be An Illusionist" should contain the phrase.... "Have more charisma and talent than money." Otherwise you will be relegated to a vast majority of well funded but very forgettable box pushers. If it were not for the follow spot, we would never know who the "Illusionist" was. Then again, the lead assistant/dancer has frequently been more dynamic and a stronger performer than the so called magician in the last few decades.
