I'm curious. So many on this site seem to have so many resources and have read so much.
How many books related to magic do you buy every year? If you want, you can tell us about DVDs too - I'd be interested in that also. |

Nowadays the rate of publishing is very slow compared to 20 years ago.
I'm purchasing around 15/20 per year now. I've almost everything I need so it is only new books. I never buy any DVD. Maybe one every two years. |

Wow. That's still about one every three weeks. How many did you buy before you had 'almost everything you need'?

Too many.
But in seriousness - probably at least 10 a year, maybe up to 20 if I happen to find a lot of good books. I rarely buy DVDs. I don't actually like watching them. Over the past year I've gotten 3 I think, because I had no other options for certain routines I wanted to learn. The problem is the only way I can watch them in through my XBox because my computer doesn't have an optical drive.

I suppose it is. I do read a fair amount, and I have since I was a kid. So getting through books is usually a fairly quick process unless the book is really dragging in the writing style.

Yes, it is rather a lot. I think my way of learning is pretty close to Christopher in this thread.
I'm living in France and si ce a few years, S&H has reached crazy levels so now I'm waiting for good deals in that regard and I'm purchasing all at once. Since 20 years, I've purchased and read a lot. I have around 2300 books, 1500 on magic only. |

I feel like a pansy. I only buy maybe a half dozen a year now. I wish there was more new stuff that really grabbed me these days.

Wow, Rachmaninov - 1500 magic books! That's a pretty sizeable personal library! How many years did it take you to get all those?
Wordsworth, that's still a fair few - nothing pansy about it! . It's a lot more than me, anyway, lol. |

Wordsworth, you can buy books from the nineties and 2000, there is plenty of great stuff in it.
Terrible Wizard, it took me around 20 years. |

These days I only jump on new books if they are limited publications and from authors I already respect. I'm working on building a good library and a lot of that is classic texts, or at least stuff that's a few years old.

I don't buy as many books as I once did. Partly because I've bought most of the ones I was interested in and partly because of the quality books being published of late. I just don't see many that interest me.

I have a budget. With limited time and resources I set a budget of $100 per year. Only affords me one to two books max. Makes me make hard choices and I have to pass on things. On the upside I read what I buy frequently and thoroughly and take my time. It's very tempting to get more but I am a hobbyist and have other commitments.

A 100 bucks is t much in the world of magic. Do you feel that you're missing out on much great stuff, greenknight? I know that I often feel irritated by my lack of resources.

I know this may sound hypocritical, being someone who buys a ton of books, but I don't think having resources is the most important thing to being a good performer.
It's more important to build your stage craft and exercise your creativity. I am willing to bet that someone who thoroughly studies Mark Wilson's book has enough material for an entire career. So don't worry too much if you can't grab the amount of books or whatever that some of us can. Work with what you have and hone it to perfection, until you're better at a few things than anyone else in the world.

I think we are all the same in this regard. I feel bad if I can't purchase a book which seems interesting.
Green knight, I think the best for you would be to buy classic book on magic so you are busy for months. |

Start very beginning, say 16 years ago almost most my purchase were tricks and DVDs.
Then a few years passed, after watched John Carney DVD he once said, only 10% of magic effects on video / DVD, 90% and most best are in the books. Since then my habit changed upside down. Now 95% of my all new purchase are books only. Depends on new release I probably purchase one month for each month, sometimes three or four during peak release season. Still I looking forward to get Max Maven EMC DVD set.
Most memorable moment - with Maestro Juan Tamariz & Consuelo Lorgia in FISM Busan 2018.

To be honest, I do feel like I may miss out, but that's a first world problem. So big perspective wise, it doesn't matter. I agree with WitchDocChris...Someone with just one book who really focuses can be a great entertainer with magic. There will always be another book...There is no end. Even with my small library now I have more than enough.

Yes, first world problem; yes,not the most important thing .... But still highly irritating, lol . Who doesn't envy those who have easy access to well stocked magic libraries, mentors, clubs, conventions, books, DVDs, etc etc?
Not that all that will necessarily and on their own make you a better magician .... But it'll probably help, and it'll make the developmental process more fun Anyway, aren't we all just limited by budget and time (which is often really just a budget problem)? |
