There are many wonderful new "Rice Bowls" effects on the market. Some you can show empty first (MAK "Brahmin" bowls). Others fill up slowly like lota bowls with water. Others once used hat coils (ala Abbott's Spurting Rice Bowls which are no longer sold apparently).
My guess is there are many great "Gospel" routines out there for this standard trick (other than using John 1:16). Any ideas you'd like to share? Rice and water are both pretty messy- alternatives out there? I have a pair of plastic rice bowls (where one is a lota bowl) which I hope to use for a kids Gospel routine in the next month or so, always fishing around for more good routine ideas... |

I do remember a post here on The Magic Café' about 10 years ago about various possible Gospel routines using the rice bowls but I can't find the previous discussion or I would link to it here.
I do remember the magician Jade giving a good piece of advice to use "instant mashed potatoes" rather than rice as the displayed "stack" stays upright longer when showing the "doubling" of the quantity than rice does (which most immediately slides off the bowl and onto the tray below). So I am going to try that idea for sure. I also remember one magician commenting on using black flax seed instead of rice as the black could represent multiplying sin if one does not address it with the cleansing eternal "water" of Christ. (e.g. using the "woman at the well" story found in John 4:5042). So then can talk about their use of "water pots" at Jacob's well, etc. (and the Brahmin bowls by MAK magic do look a little like miniature water pots). ---But before the water was drawn, Jesus talked about her needy condition first (show the black flakes and multiple them). I may then try putting black food coloring in the instant mashed potato flakes as I am not sure even where to find a bag of black fax seed here locally. Another idea was to pour the appearing water into another similar bowl at the end of the routine- then that water turns into white snow (so one can refer to Psalm 51:7). |

Whoops, should be John 4: 5-42 cited above.
I think I will check over at the grocery store- get black beans or some other black colored dried seeds. Then will use a thumb tip or some other method to get the slush powder into the other rice bowl when pouring the water into it (so it turns into snow). Just seems like lots of good Gospel routine potential for the Brahmin Rice Bowls/MAK Magic (Abbott's sells these on their web site www.AbbottMagic.com ). Some of the kids may already know how to do the trick if they bought their own starter magic sets which may have included a pair of plastic bowls. That being said, I still think these bowls could be used for a number of good Gospel routines. I will be grateful for the rest of my life for all the Gospel routine books (thousands of Gospel routines in bound pages and/or lecture notes) and tricks given to me by longtime FCMer Joe Parham--- on his condition to me "that you use them". That I do! I refer to them constantly. What a treasure trove of information and history Joe has collected. Joe entrusted me with his lifelong collected massive bound collection of Gospel routines written by just about every well known Gospel magician in the last 50 years including many wonderful ones written by Joe himself. He provided me with a "Who's Who" of routines, many in published lecture notes he bought decades ago. Included are: Zachman, Payne, Johnson, Laflin, Varro, Baker, Mills, Dracup, Wilson, Alexander, London- and just about anyone who lectured on magic at the FCM conventions- they're all in there. I spent an hour or more just today trying to find even one "rice bowl" Gospel routine all in these collected volumes- still up came up empty. So apparently we can till some new ground here. Thanks again all for reading and posting here on The Magic Café, hope you can continue with your ideas. Thanks Ralph! |

I will post in a few days a rice bowl routine under a separate heading.
They initial thoughts are: After first showing the short "The Samaritan Woman" "Speed Sketch" video(from "Stories of Jesus in John DVD" available from Wesleyan Publishing House), I am going to use the MAK Rice Bowls (Brahmin,Aluminum, purchased from www.AbbottMagic.com ) to reinforce the above Bible story with the kids. John 4:4-42. I purchased at the health food store 2 pounds of black dried beans for $4.12- much more than enough needed to fill the rice bowls many times over/and to practice with. These black beans will fit in better with the story than using white rice. |

Roger - maybe I need to come visit you just so I can have a look through that collection of routines!
You know I collect that kind of stuff. I found in my spreadsheet index of my Gospel Magic Library a few routines for the Rice Bowls: Book: Magical Gospel Lessons by Lawrence Burden "The Great Commission: Go!" Book: Gospel Patter for Fifty Familiar Effects by Oz and Wild "Problem with Pride" Book: A Magician Goes to Church by Jim Dracup "Hanson Rice Bowls (God's Blessings and Provision)" Book: Magic With An Upward Look by Jim Dracup "Rice Bowls (God's Blessings and Provision)" Book: Magic That Gives an Upward Lift by Jim Dracup "Confused using Rice Bowls (God's Blessings and Provision)" Book: Magic That Gives an Upward Lift by Jim Dracup "Pray Without Ceasing" And a search of past Christian Conjurors turned up 5 entries of routines featuring the Rice Bowls from long ago (50's and 60's) But may merit a look. |

That is a fantastic resource/outline above Jamie! Incredible you could find all this information. I may have most of the above somewhere- but I only found one Dracup book I quickly glanced at which had no rice bowl routines in it.
Is the Christian Conjurer index back online at www.FCM.org ? (last time I checked it was no longer on there). That would be helpful to be able to use that resource for sure. I probably have every Conjurer back until about 1970 or so- although when the index was on the FCM website- a FCM member could view every Christian Conjurer produced. Still available? Can you buy this massive library on computer disc from FCM now? My personal "index" of finding potential Gospel routine is: Look in a large box here, scrounge around in another stack of lecture notes over there, look through a large ring binder over here again, grab a bunch of old Christian Conjurer magazines stacked willy nilly in another old box over there, etc.. In summary, my magic collection currently is a big disorganized mess spread out over several basement rooms. So my initial scouring around turned up no Gospel magic rice bowl routines- even through I know I have the Dracup book mentioned above somewhere (published by Abbott's and is still available from them even today). My advice to all magicians (and I don't follow my own advice obviously) is to catalog/index, label and store all your magic carefully including instructions. I know that MagicBob does exactly that- he can print out on his computer everything he has with a full description. Sounds like you Jamie have done the same thing- taken the time to organize everything correctly- I am envious of that for sure. I will be at the Abbott's Hank Moorehouse Memorial Magic Flea Market in Colon, Michigan this Saturday morning (May 13, 2017)- hope to pick up a bargain or two... Hank was a great magician/helpful magic dealer who also used to preach several times a year at his home United Methodist Church in White Pigeon, Michigan. If you are a FCMer and at the flea market Saturday- be sure to say "Hey Bus!" |

Man, I wish I could make that auction!
I have many of my books indexed and most of my props indexed so I know (in some way) where I MIGHT find what I'm looking for I still have many books and VHS/DVD's that need to be indexed so I can find specific routines based on props or topic, etc. The FCM.org site has the indexes for the Conjurors and Voice here http://fcm.org/page-18176 you will get on this page if you're logged in as a member. I believe they have the magazine going back as far as the late 70's. They are planning to add more as the site slowly (I mean S-L-O-W-L-Y) takes shape. I don't think the links in the index will take you directly to said issue, but you should be able to still locate it on the site listing and download it all. I'm not sure about buying the digital files from FCM - I think they started that but decided to just keep getting to it all online as a perk of being a member. |

I should be able to post this full "Samaritan Woman" routine shortly. I ended up using the inexpensive three rice bowl set from Abbott's Magic in Colon ($36) which has two lota bowls and one un-gimmicked bowl. I also am using a small inexpensive indoor wishing well planter as a prop for this routine obtained from Wayfair.
