Thank you Twister. Yes, this will be interesting if it gets into the school's or districts Facebook.
I love your Star Trek quote. It is so absolutely true. I consider myself to be a man of high integrity. I was raised by such role models as Spider-man and Superman etc. I feel that a teacher should teacher more than their subject. (Physics in my case) A teacher should be a moral role model and I try very hard to do just that. I know there are plenty of us out there, but I do believe that teen age boys raised in the 70's without a dad in the house, probably got a better moral upbringing from comic books than from the street. Anyway, when I gave out the "participation" certificates, my best Robot driver asked "DO I have to take this?" He understood the lack of value to the thing. I told him (honestly) that it was for a year of participating in the club, and not just for the rotten contest. Btw, this contest was a local school district wide competition with only 8 schools participating. Last month we took third place (with a small cash prize) at a county wide competition with 30 or so schools as our opponents. I told the kids to focus on that victory rather than this misadventure.

Curious how loss of privilege feels like oppression, eh?

What do you mean in this context?
I don't want to misunderstand so could you be more explicit in your statement like which privilege and who is oppressed? Thank you Magnus. -Mary Mowder |

These are advantaged kids competing at an elite level, given opportunities that most students will never get. What they "lost" is trivial compared to what they received.

If you need fear to enforce your beliefs, then your beliefs are worthless.

??? My kids are inner city kids attending a 100% title 1 school. (That means they get free lunch due to having parents with a low income)
My kids are not advantaged.

They are at a robotics competition. They are already in the elite. They are gaining more by preparing and participating than they could ever get with first place recognition.
What percentage of students get this kind of opportunity?

Similarly, Magnus is a white guy living in a first world democracy...go ahead and steal his car; he has no cause for complaint.

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |
