I have been developing an effect, using a purple heart wooden paddle that teaches about a historical event.
I start by telling of how Kubilai Kahn had a kingdom of people who all spoke different languages. I show the paddle, which has silver characters on it, each from a different type of text (Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Arabic). I then tell of the form of writing created by a priest in the Kahn's sevice, that was based upon phonics, as a way of starting to unify the communications of the empire (show "pahgs pah" script on paddle, written in gold). There is a bit of by play, telling of how the Kahn had issued edict after edict, stating that this new script was to be used in all official documents. I show, as needed, the new script, then it reverts to the old forms of writing. In the end, the old forms of text proved to be so ingrained that changing it proved to be impossible. It is at this time that the paddle is shown to have the same original characters on it, but are all cut out of the paddle. I have the effect created, I just need a means of switching to the final product. I have tried several different switches, but have not found one with which I am comfortable performing in front of an audience. Paddle was made by tracing a standard, full sized plastic paddle. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

I have finally come up with a potential solution:
I could speak of the paperwork involved with this attempt to change to the new writing, and wrap it up n a small sheet of paper. Set fire to the sheet and reveal the paddle with the characters missing, the open lettering looking like the metal has melted out. The props have now been altered. I will try it and see if I can come up with lines to bridge the routine together. Hmmm.... |

Since you are speaking of papers, why not just use a Buddha money mystery paper fold?

I have to admit, I have never heard of such a critter.
Where might I find this Buddha Money Mystery Paper Fold? |

You'll find it being used in The Crafty Shoppe of Little Horrors on The Magic Nook Web site, under the title "Your Papers, Please!", along with an Ancient Egyptian routine you might also like for using it.

One can also purchase from Penguin Magic
http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/266 Once you see how the trick is made, you can make one up from scratch. Using a heavier parchment style paper for the outer papers and an onion skin/ tissue type of paper for wrapping your paddle in. If you are using this for your SCA events, I would go with just a parchment style paper. I do admit though, that Jim’s effect looks interesting too. |
