Hello! I'm currently trying to give myself the best self education possible, and I need a source book to begin learning Q&A. I have looked on past posts and it seems John Riggs work is recommended. That being said, it was stated on an old thread. Before I invest, what do you all recommend for Q&A?
Let it be known, I DO already own and study Cassidy's Fundamentals, as well as Atlas' "One in the Chamber" which is truly brilliant for close-up/parlor, and "Cue & Hay" from Looch's Black Project. I just want to make sure I am getting my foundation from the right places. |

In general, there are two main kinds of acts people refer to by the name Q&A:
1) answering personal questions, like a fortune teller (ala Anna Eva Fay) 2) revealing people's thoughts, like a mind reader (ala Dunniger) Knowing which is more your style will determine what the best resources will be. |

Alrightly, what are your thoughts on the three aforementioned methods? I've heard (not seen) Jermay does a spectacular Q&A, if I may ask, why is that so, and which method does he use?
I recently returned from Derren's SECRET, and it seems he did primarily regurgitation, but sprinkled in question answering and thought reading as well. |

Jermay does propless Q&A, like George Anderson in his "Dynamite Mentalism"

Actually, Luke has done several variations of Q&A. Not all 'propless.'
For my money, he's one of the greatest practitioners on the planet. e |

ESamuels, what makes you say that? What about Jermay's performances strikes you so hard?
How do you all feel about propless vs. non-propless Q&A? |

Don't really have anything to add. I like Jermay's style because he seems very genuine.
I think a mix of props and propless is best for theatrical texture.

You may want to consider getting Bob Cassidy's Q&A Masterclass. Simply outstanding.
http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/7755 And Scott Creasey's My Q&A: http://www.mentalmagicism.com/store/p4/My_Q%26A.html These are two of the best Q&A resources I have invested in. Why? Cassidy's Masterclass is quite comprehensive, detailed, covering everything from one-on-one, small groups and stage approaches - and includes a full performance (about 40 minutes). My Q&A by Scott Creasey provides one of the simplest, cleanest ways to get started with very little expense. |

In fact, I would estimate he has performed some form of Q&A more than just about any active performer in the world. As a result, there is not a wasted beat in his presentations. Everything said and done, serves a, precise, purpose. All the while, it's engaging/entertaining to watch, even if you're not the subject of his focus. As for the use of 'props,' it's purely a question of what you want to do and how you'd like to do it. That said, performing propless Q&A without making it sound like stock scripting, is a major challenge that I have seen few performers pull off. I tend to prefer being armed with actual audience information, which I can use to great advantage as I deliver it with a high degree of confirmed accuracy while never making anything obvious, as it's the subtleties that can make a Q&A kill. This was the motivation in creating my own Q&A system. Bottom-line; Q&A can be the single greatest presentation in all of mentalism. It can also be a complete, painful, bore, when principles are misunderstood and/or it's poorly presented. And I speak from personal experience as I really sucked at it while I was learning its many nuances, on stage. e |

Cassidy's Artful Mentalism 2 has several methods, including the excellent Scorio's Message. Add to that Paul Voodini's lecture video for demonstration of several methods he has used, and also watch Richard Osterlind Live Without a Net. I don't have anything by Jermay so I can't make any suggestions there.
With all performance arts, the real teacher is experience. Practice it whenever you can. There are a couple of methods for a one person Q&A in PMM. That way you can practice the answering one at a time informally. Or look at the section on Burt Reese for doing 3-5 folks. That way you get good at answering questions before you have the big crowd to entertain. All three sorts of answers can be good or awful. I like least the information regurgitation approaches, but I think that seems safest to performers who don't feel right about giving psychic advice. Patrick |

Thank you all for your recommendations and insights, I just picked up Scott Creasey's "My Q&A".
In the realm of propless Q&A, what source book would you recommend? I have a very specific Q&A act I would like to build, but my hands are occupied throughout, and optimally, I am blindfolded. I know being able to do this is a while off, but none the less. |

If you want the best education possible, do read the fortune-teller serie by John Riggs.
Very old books offers a great, free, foundation to do a blindfolded Q&A if you can find them. A more modern resource would be the Falkenstein video. Propless Q&A has a different feel, you might not like it if you would not be confortable just reading the tarot from stage to your audience members. If you like the idea then Anderson, Finley and Jermay (in this order) have things for you. |

Maybe don't buy expensive materials at start. Instead pick up some free books, like Craig Browning "Introduction to mentalism" or "Cold Reading" where Craig talk about Q&A. Or inexpensive like George Anderson books. Most modern books about Q&A based on old ideas.

Also, I don't recommend "My Q&A" from Scott Creasey. If you want to buy it - think twice. I think this book has very high price and not new methods/ideas. You can for that price grab books about Q&A by Anderson, Nelson, Riggs and you learn more.

Raum, Creaseys work was only $38 I believe
I love the work done by Riggs in other areas, would you recommend his Complete Mental Writings Vol. 1 or just buying his fortuneteller series separately? |

I honestly don't believe propless is better. Everything that happens on stage has to be designed to appeal the eye of your audience. In this sense, props play a very big role.
If you have the questions written and collected, you have the perfect visual of taking a slip of paper from a bowl, place the slip of paper near your forehead and then start to answer the question. Actually not only is a good visual but is also good method-wise. I also recommend you check out John Riggs "Hull card" DVD. I think you can still get it from him. |

I am not sure the blindfold really matters in Q&A except to create the impression that you have no visual feedback. That said, some of the strongest material presented is done eyes open like Luke Jermay.
