In checkers far easier than chess.

Yes I think in general chess is much harder to play. But played well they both require the ability to see several moves ahead,
a talent many never seem to master. Tom

I also suffer from winning position syndrome to some degree. I shudder (literally) to think of all the times I've snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Mostly in blitz and lightning, but still annoying. Out of curiosity, did you play around the time of the first influx of Russians of IM strength and above who were unknown here? My "heyday" was between 1976 (age 14) and 1982 and it was a big problem in NY and the surrounding areas. They were recent immigrants and they would play enough games in minor rated tournaments so that their rating was no longer provisional, taking care to get a low rating. Then they would enter the the NY Open and the World Open et al, at the lower levels and just sweep. They would then go dormant until the next year and play at the next lowest level available until there rating caught up with their true level. I'm wondering because a LOT of people were p1ssed, but there really wasn't anything to be done. I heard towards the end of my "career" steps were being taken to address the issue but by then I didn't care as I was onto other things.

Pieced this together from an animation I did a few years back. The music is by our very own Arthur Stead.

I was fortunate to be taken under the wing of one of the recent Russian immigrants, that I spoke of in my post to Lobo. His name was Arkady Kaufmann. I met him when I was 12. He was a brutal taskmaster - he allowed for NO fooling around. I really loved that man.

I'm glad you guys agree that chess players would never cheat playing chess remotely.
... Now I'm ready to challenge the winner of the game! |
