I think we need to be fair and support originators, regardless of thread content...he is right to speak out...

It's because it's not about consumerism, it's about supporting the originators work...

I feel bad as I have both, but the poker chip routine I worked on, I dropped...will need to investigate the package again though...

Yeah Tarik, but the mental pen guys acknowledged that they based their pen on Andreas pen

So this is fair game, for him to post on here – if he feels ‘wronged’ because they have taken away the credit or not included it in the products info/download

For Andreas I would say, as they are happy to acknowledge they based it on your idea…

You surely have the freedom to put stuff on packaging/ad copy like – ‘the original Mental Pen, and still the best design’ – then maybe bring out a pen at a much more competitive price and flood the magic shop market… you just need a strong name and this could be a winner for you. At least that way you can make some money for your idea

‘The original Mentalist write no write pen, many have copied, no one has bettered. Just $15 from all good magic suppliers’

Anyway – all the best

The Duster, I agree anyone can post all they like on any thread I am just expressing my opinion as you are , I just find it tedious when there is rarely anything really new in magic and I would be surprised if Iain would have bought mental pen if he didn't at least think Arks could be bettered Tarik 😊

It was because a year had past between me using the poker chip, not feeling the routine was right for me, so not using it... So obviously I can't keep track of everything, forever in my brain... I remember using a scarab writer years ago, but don't anymore...couldn't tell you why it got superceded but it did...

It was common practice, that if you had a similar idea, independently, you would talk it over...and if the originator gave permission, then it was released... It seems like a credit was given, but permission should have been sort, especially in this case (and I have zero reason as to why metal-writing people would lie)...they've always been very open and honest...

If you guys don't care, well...I think that's why people think ethics are declining in the magic creation side of things...

I do care Iain but it seems just strange how Ark was so late to the party . Anyway I am out of here metal writing have pmed me and I will reply as don't want to clog up this thread as that is unethical in itself . I will answer their pm but it's the mental pen guys he really wants to be sending private messages to not me lol . It just seems rather ironic to me that 14 pages in and well after the horse has bolted people start mentioning other versions . It's a fantastic effect whoever came up with the idea I love it but I can assure anyone the originator with this idea certainly will have preceded all of these guys . They have just made a sharpie version which many of us magicians much prefer Tarik 😊

To settle the battle axe. With proper accreditation I am happy. It seems to me that some people insist of thinking that my motifs are about money and sales. I can assure you that so isn't the case. Me and Joao are not competing of the same customers. If he have added accreditation on his website and in the video, in the same way as Murphy's have done and soon Penguin, I am happy. I think that Joao have taken mine idea and made some changes to it. Anyone that knows me also know this. If he had contacted me in the first place I would have give him my permission to use the idea. New ideas are constantly created with the inspiration of the old ones. I don't think it is fair to stop innovation. (a copy on the other hand, with the same purpose is another thing) I'm sure that there is a memory from 2014 Cologne in the mind of Joao that sparked this idea, I don't think that he was aware of that I already had used the gimmick in forcing and also released the handling in a routine. I don't want to see the bad in people, I rather see something more constructive. I hope he make good sales of the pen, at least it tells me that my idea was a good one.

I will not judge the better product, because I don't care. I only care about the ethics in our business and that creators always need to fight for our ideas. And obviously we need to know everything that are released, so we can be on time to the Party. I find this hard when creating magic is anything but visiting forums and search the Internet for magic tricks.

Besides this I have another reason. I am about to release a new effect that use my tool in a force, as I did in 2016. Imagine the reaction on the café when 14 pages of not knowing the fact magicians, start to judge. Now at least there is a memory in this thread, and because the story have come to the surface, there is nothing more to argue about.

Best

Oh I love the level (of ethics) over here. Yeah the idea of a non working pen is old. Probably as old as the pen itself. This is not the case. The point is that Andreas pen was showed to Joao Miranda and three years later the clone "mental pen" is released. I doubt this was a planned theft since I'm very aware on how the human mind works with memory and time. BUT if it was me - I'd be so ashamed I'd do anything to make it right.

Anyway, the notes about hijacking and being late to "the party" - this is a forum for magic products. Where else should we discuss this? And as Andreas said, some forum persons would probably accuse him of theft when he posts his new ideas with his original mental pen. There's always an easy way to fix 'lack of knowledge'.. And it's not to keep carry on, looking away.

I'm happy to say that João Miranda had contacted me and that he had updated his products with credits. He also told me that he don't remember me showing him the tip. We have decided to drop this subject because non of us want to act like children screaming. You are the liar, No you are the liar.

So for anyone wondering Me and João have shake hands over the Internet. I wish him good luck with his sales and he wish me luck with my new ideas.

Best

Its good but some folks will still think some pens don't write upside down and that's the secret.Even if you tell em its a magic marker. Also with a clipline effect ink bleeds onto newspaper and you can't see the word very well. With a pencil however all is good. You can show the spectator what to do and mark xs upside down and in the process of rubbing your markings out switch to a non writing pencil......
They look exactly like a pencil as they are, but no graphite gets added to the slurry. So you can sharpen it treat it just like a pencil but it won't write......
I have one just needs repainting as it does say dummy pencil. It is not like those fake rubber pencils .Its a real pencil....

Thanks. This is nice idea. You don't have to paint it. Just cut it shorter and make it look worn. I believe it's even more credible that way.

I can print the voo doo doll and it prints correctly on one sheet of paper but it only prints one in the middle of the page. Then I have tried to print 8 or 10 per sheet but again if only prints one and it prints it smaller. So do we only get one per page the way the pdf is set up? What do I need to do to get more than one doll per sheet? What do I need to do so it will print multiple on one page. The PDf will not let me convert it to a jpeg file.

I do these always using image processing softweare (GIMP, Photoshop, PSP etc.). I first take a screenshot of the pdf-image and then copypaste it as many times I need and then print it. This is a good practise if you want to make your own gimmicks or props.

I have a question...

Will the Sharpie dry out with the gimmick on the tip and the cap off?

In other words, does having the gimmick on the marker insure that the marker does not dry out?

I use thick 2.4MIL plastic bags (available on eBay) to keep all my gimmicks and props in good order. In this case it should be small enough to have as little air space as possible. Also plastic test tubes with metal cork are good for storing everything.

Mental Pen – João Miranda

Product description : João Miranda seems to be a very prolific inventor and producer these times, but this doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing ! When someone puts a lot of tricks out, it may be trash releases, just for the sake of money. Here, João proves that not only he is a prolific inventor but also a good one ! And one of the example is Mental Pen, one of his latest release. Basically, it’s a gimmicked pen which will allow you to do amazing routines, mainly mentalism ones but not only. Is it as good as the ad-copy says it is, let’s find out !

Price and where to buy it : This is sold at $39.95 and you can find it in nearly every Murphy's magic « partner » shop and also on the website of the creator, João Miranda : http://www.joaomiranda.com/store/index.p......_id=9091 !

What you get : You get the standard packaging from João Miranda which is a very nice cardboard box, fully printed with an amazing artwork. I really like those packaging, they’re good, neat and well done. Inside, you’ll find a card with the link in order to watch the explanation video, it is approximately 45 minutes long. João does a great job explaining the working of the gimmick and 5 very strong routine (especially the voodoo one). In the box, you can also find a regular sharpie as well as 3 gimmicks which is very nice attention because they’re so small and losing one would be easy. You also get something to reset the pen. Basically, you’re provided with everything you need to perform this trick right out of the box ! I’m really amazed by the quality of the small gimmicks, they must have been a pain in the *** to make. Really happy with what I received.

Teaser : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7AcRjJD9G4

The pros and the cons : Here is the core of my review, let's begin with the cons, as I will usually be doing, I prefer to keep the good things for the end.

THE CONS :
– You have to carry an additional tool in order to reset the pen, I would have liked something self-contained.

THE PROS :
– The most impressive thing with the Mental Pen is that the spectator will do all the work for you, you don’t have to touch, switch or do anything with the pen ! The spectator himself will trigger the gimmick, which I find very cool.
– The gimmicks are really well made, I can imagine all the work that was needed to make such small gimmicks ! They did an amazing job and they provide you with 3 gimmicks so if you lose one, you can still take another one.
– It will work on any Sharpie so you can easily fit the gimmicks on another gimmicked sharpie such as Smoke 2.0, Double Cross or anything else. You will have a powerful weapon all built into a simple Sharpie pen.
– Even if you need something else is needed to reset the gimmick, the reset is very quick, I would say less than 10 seconds.
– This is more a tool than a trick in itself, I like the fact you can come up with your own routines, but I wouldn’t do all of them to the same spectators because they may find something weird about always writing with that Sharpie.
– This is much more intelligent than a pen that doesn’t write when it is hold upside down, João and his team really work this a lot !
– It doesn’t take any space at all, it works as a regular sharpie so you don’t have any excuse for not carrying this !

Overall rating : This is an amazing tool that you can carry everywhere, you must have this in your pocket ! 4/4 hearts.

As for the difficulty level, nothing hard, the gimmick works itself, so you can fully concentrate on your routine and presentation, I would say 1/5 stars.

Similar products : I don’t know any other pen that can achieve the same effect. In the Engraved set by Metal Writing, there is a similar tool but it is used for another thing.
