I call it Dyeing Plumes because I start with all white plumes and "dye" them various colors.

I really enjoy the plumes. You don't see them performed much anymore, which is too bad. I thought your routine was well put together. The ending was
a good surprise also. Thank you for sharing a wonderful routine. Mark

Thanks for posting, I loved your routine and actually was fooled the first time I viewed it. Very well thought out routine using some great misdirection.

Your work has definitely paid off! Did you make the plumes and set-up yourself? Very professional looking. Well done. Mark

Very nicely done! I especially liked the touch with the silks.

Looks clean.
Similarly, Die Tubes routines were performed with a different twist. Several white silks turned different colors. The twist was when one of the silks was pushed "through" the tube a second time, it appeared from the top unchanged then that silk or another white silk entered the tube and that last silk changed again even though it appeared the non-changing previous silk was the culmination. It was a build up. The plume routine had a very good ending too. It had build up and was akin to a mismade flag routine. Both styles end with a topper. Well done.

Interesting idea and much better thought out than most. I would have selected brighter colors as the green and purple have a tendency to get lost on stage. Years ago Horace Marshall, who invented the one ahead used for most plumes routines, sold a set of matching color changing silks to work with the routine. The silks would change color and then the plumes.
I still do the plumes every show and it still kills the audience. As I said yours in the first decent "new" idea I have seen in over 40 years. I commend you on your blocking and movement. The Pink Panther was a fun idea though I am not sure copyright holders would let you get away with using the image or music.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. Here's a bit of background on the routine.
I bought my first set of plumes back in 1956 (I was 16). Almost immediately, I thought of doing a mismade, red, white & blue plume as a climax. My first attempts at making one were failures, and the idea stayed on the back burner until 2002, when I came up the one that's in the video. Meanwhile, I never liked the fact that in the standard plume routine, every second plume that came out was the same color that had been put in moments before. When I finally worked out an acceptable method to eliminate that, I realized that I had to make it obvious that none of the colors that went in, ever came out. That led to the idea of using all white plumes to start.

Wow !!! Congratulations Tom !!!
I was always interested in the dying plumes routine, but never liked the ones on the market for the same reason like you Tom. To me it kills the magic, specially if the routine is longer by using too many plumes with every second plume the same color then the one going in a moment before... Your presentation is interesting, refreshing and funny ! You did a *** excellent job on this. Thank you for this magical moment, Tom. And if ever you think of marketing them, I wouldn't hesitate a second to buy a set even though I agree with Richard's comment, that the colors could be brighter, specially the green and the purple plumes. Oliver. |

Ok the one ahead principle was beat to death with cheap copies. The original color changing plume (as done by Levante) was not a good effect. Three scrawny plumes were changed in color until one four times the size of the other came out. When Marshall invented the newer version, he fooled the heck out of everyone, including Jack Gywnne. After so many cheap copies started knocking him off, it became a staple in every cheap inexpensive magician's show. That is what helped to ruin it. Done properly with proper pacing, it still play well.
As said before Tom's routine is the only thing I have seen with any sense of real thinking behind it. Most guys have this great idea but they have never worked it or studied the Psychology behind it. Meanwhile I will keep doing them every show (2:12) as the laymen love it.

It's rare that you can get a photo at exactly the right moment where nearly everyone is smiling and reacting to the magic. This one was taken at the finale of my plume routine.
