Maybe this is the wrong place to post this?.... I just wondered where Bill Hegbli had got to?
He doesn't seem to have posted anything here for over a month which is quite unusual for such a regular user and contributor to the Café. Does anyone know him personally? I'm not looking to get in contact I just wondered if he's ok. I can't PM him as he has me blocked.

Yeah Neal. Bill has left the Café. In a PM to me he stated:
"Now you are expected to keep the Café alive. So bone up. I turned 70 last month are there are some things I look forward to doing. I am just tired of the negative people on the Café. As I see it, the Café is suppose to be a discussion forum, but no one wants to put in any effort at discussing anything. I have tried several time, 6 I think, to start a discussion, and all I get is negative comments and off topic remarks. It could be a place of fun and education, but instead it is worthless posts of nonsense. Posts asking where to buy something, lists of your favorite whatever, where do you buy magic, just nonsense. No one can ask a fully informed question, so they get nasty when you respond to them as young person or newbie. This website has 65 thousand members and there are only 50 logged on at any one time, sometimes 99, when they are at work, not working. LOL So I will stop at 20,000 posts, it was fine before my posts and during my banned times, and it will be fine again. The only difference is they will not get the best possible answer to their questions. Not that anyone does not know the answer, it is because they do not want to tell what they know. Good luck Doug. Bill Well. There you have it. Bill will be missed... Doug |

That's too bad, I always enjoyed reading Bills posts. He left a year or so for some reason and was back after a while.I hope he just took a break and will be back.

I have his P.O. address. I'll write a note.
Bill and I don't always have the same opinion on "things", but, I have great respect for his knowledge, and ability to provide specific information on any of a number of old routines and props.

Well he's not wrong about there being a lot of worthless posts of nonsense.... but that's the internet for you. If one can tune out posts that are, for whatever reason, irritating I believe there is value in a forum of interested people.
I liked Bill and looked forward to reading his posts..... even though I knew a good portion of them would have the capacity to be irritating for me to read. he wasn't unknown to make posts about things he'd later admit he knew nothing about. He'd be quick to knock down many an innocent question or innocent response to a question, and generally act in a very curmudgeonly way. It was difficult to have a discussion with Bill as he wasn't exactly open to other ideas and opinions on things. In fact it's kind of exactly what one might expect from a forthright 70 year old man! His opinions were based on 70 years of experience. It's hard to see another perspective or point of view as also being a viable option. The thing is..... I liked him for all that too. Yes he was all those irritating things... but he was also incredibly knowledgeable and more than willing to share that with anyone. He certainly helped me with finding out about certain props and routines I was interested in. I certainly have my share of irritating idiosyncrasies so I don't begrudge Bill his. Here's a story that sums up Bill for me.... He'd used some language in a post directed at me that was mildly insulting. Nothing that bothered me.... so in response I drafted a mildly amusing post which involved using his own words/insult back at him. I thought though that he might not take it in the gentle teasing way it was intended. So rather than post it I PM'd him to ask if he'd mind me making the post explaining that it was being written in fun and if he had any objection to the contents of it I wouldn't post it. He found the words I used so rude and insulting he blocked me from his PM box. I don't think he realised or recognised that they were his own words that he'd written to me. But here's the thing.... despite this he still continued to post useful posts on subjects I was asking questions about. He was still happy to help me out. How can you not like someone like that? Cheers to Bill. Sorry to see you go. Come back and visit sometime.

I can certainly understand Bill's frustration. I too have been waining in my posts. Just not enough hours in the days. I am not ready to walk away but I have cut back a lot on my posting and even checking the posts. Just not able to do it all.

I always loved Bill's posts. Sure he could be feisty, but I always took that as a sign of his passion for the art. He was very knowledgeable and generous with that knowledge. If he is in fact retired, I wish him the best and hope he is relaxing, and enjoying the magic of life.

That's too bad. Not everyone has a great bedside manner and unable to see facial expressions or hear voice inflection the internet tends to makes comments seem harsher than they were meant. What amazes me about Bill is how often he provided a link for purchasing the prop in question. I own a nice set of rings thanks to him.
The thread that I think of when thinking of Bill is one regarding his beloved Chavez School of Magic. The new owner/instructor, Larry Wirtz posted that they no longer accept neophytes. You have to have some experience as a magician before they will accept you as a student. Bill thought this was rather stupid and wanted to know who this Mr. Wirtz was, as he had never heard of him. Basically implying: Who is this nobody screwing up my great alma mater! Mr. Wirtz came right back with, Who are you Mr. Hegbli. I have never heard of you. Further more I have no record showing you as former student. WOW If these two had been standing face to face, I would have expected fisticuffs to break out. The wonderful thing about this forum is that even if Bill never posts again, his input will remain. I have read many more archived posts than new posts. I love the search feature. I regularly search out authors and props unknown to me, that I have come across on the big auction site. I have learned so much doing this. I hope that this server is backed up multiple times, as I view the magic café to be in the same category as Tarbell. Yes, a lot of crap (like the message I'm typing now) gets posted; But if you search for specific information, you can mine a lot of GOLD from this site. |

It might be simply that he realized how much time he was spending on the Café' and not spending doing other things, like practicing magic, performing magic, visiting friends, going on a Sunday drive, meeting new people, etc. I think that Bill spent an inordinate amount of time browsing the Café'. It was pretty much a full time job for him. Magic is pretty much his life. Manipulation was a main interest, focus, and passion for him.
He made 20,000 posts each represents a minimum of one hour on the Café. I know that Bill spent hours reading posts in several rooms of interest. But even at one hour per post spent on the Café' that is a little over two years of his life spent here. The up side is that he made many friends here. Friends he stays in touch with via email and PMs. I know he'll keep in contact, have discussions on magic (and life and things), and arguments with all of his friends. He's that kind of guy. I just hope he enjoys his retirement from the Café'. Fair winds and following seas to him!
