Exposing Mr. Oscar Munoz’s dishonesty!
by Francis Tabary I have just discovered that Mr. Oscar Munoz, the past president of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, is an unscrupulous individual! I had already had an unpleasant foretaste of it at the 2014 Blackpool Convention, during the Friday evening show, when Mr. Munoz began performing my Fism-winning rope routine, although he knew quite well that I was to perform it myself the following day in the Saturday night gala show. I could hardly believe my eyes, but when I realized what he was doing, I left my seat, walked up to the stage and, in front of the 3000 attendees, asked him to stop his performance. However, let bygones be bygones. Now I have come across the fact that Mr. Munoz has released two DVDs (“Oscar Munoz Live!”) in which he brazenly explains MY rope routine! I am a broad-minded kind of guy, but enough is enough! Had he been a young beginner, I would probably have forgiven him; but he is the I.B.M. past president and, as such, should be wise (or clever) enough to show a little respect for other magicians’ creations, including mine. Although I know that exposing Mr. Munoz’s dishonesty and theft may turn a lot of people against me, this is the straw that breaks the camel’s back! I do not mind him performing my routine, but by selling it with his explanation he proves himself to be, not only an unprincipled plagiarist, but also just plain stupid. Angrily yours, F. Tabary |

I read this topic in the French magical forum.
Tabari - created an unrivaled magic routine. I saw a lot of magicians who did this routine - but it was Tabari who was the best. I looked at this routine - in his performance it's boring and not aesthetic.(Oscar Munoz) It is aesthetics and subtle French humor - the personification of this routine. I will say 3 times the shame - the disgrace of his behavior at the conference, the shame of the Vile DVD, a shame to him - for his attitude towards the creator of the routine. http://virtualmagie.com/forum/topic/5910......de-libm/ Francis Tabary - I agree with you!
I love the magic & history of magic! My favorites magicians - Dai Vernon, Max Malini, Fielding West, Michael Finney, Jeff Hobson, Bob Sheets, Nick Lewin, Harry Murphy, Dick Oslund- great showmen of magic!

For me, the very boring version is Oscar Munoz. Tabari uses very subtle humor in the beginning.
The Tabari version is a version of theatrical magic. The fact remains that Tabari defends his routine - from copying on the DVD. Gaëtan Bloom - I fully agree with his defense of Mr. Tabari. Oscar Munyoz - many dear - magician. Therefore I don't understand why it was necessary to arrive thus. Possibly it is personal grievance with Mr. Tabari about whom we don't know. It is my point of view. Perhaps something is hidden from us - but nevertheless - I speak about the fact of full copying of a routine on DVD. Kozmomagic - I am sure it is aware of events - perhaps we will hear their point of view on this matter. As they - the third party of the conflict.

If you say about the power of this magical act.
My friend shows the version of Tabary - more than 15 years + 2 stage tricks. And so using only 3 tricks - he was able to make money for a car and a house! And he earns a lot of money. He says it's thanks to Mr. Tabary's DVD. The problem is not that someone shows Tabary's act. The problem is that he created a personal DVD with training - thus, as if to say that this is his creation.

I confess that I, too, have performed this wonderful routine almost verbatum for a couple years. I have since changed the sequencing and added and taken out various portions to create my "own" routine. I learned it from Tabary's dvd. (Thank you for sharing such a wonderful routine.) But it certainly grieves me to hear it was explained on someone else's dvd without permission. I have far too much respect for magic and it's creators than to do that to Mr Tabary or anyone else.

I think this was rather tacky for the IBM past president to do this and set a bad example for other on the issue of plagiarism.
I have to ask some questions here. When a performer (originator) releases an effect or routine in print and/or DVD aren't they also implying they are releasing permission to perform this? And what would the difference be if a member of a magic organization or a president of the same organization performed the material? I could see this as more of an issue if the original material had not been released to the public, so where do we draw the line? This sounds more like a case of poor judgment and poor professional courtesy than plagiarism. I'm interested in your opinions...

Most of the time when you buy someones gag, joke, magic trick etc. And you are on the same show together the performer who invented it does it. But, if an organization books both performers they must think there is enough difference in the two presentation that it's ok. Both performers were paid to do their acts and that's what sounds like happened when they were at the same magic convention.

To all concerned,
Oscar's behavior here is not an isolated incident. This kind of behavior is why I'm not involved with magic organizations. They seem to be vulnerable to people who are all about ego and moving up while behaving despicably. Oscar was badmouthing my Magellan levitation to other magicians several years ago before it was well known. He was in a position to benefit politically with another Texas magicienne who was very jealous of my creativity. They seemed dead set on me never being able to participate in Texas magic. I was fine with that. I moved to Vegas, and befriended ALL of my childhood heroes and made lifelong, credible friends who 'get' magic, and know how to treat others. Munoz approached me in a bar at the TAOM in Houston several years ago, in the middle of all of his badmouthing of my effect, and wanted to tell me how great that he thought the Magellan was. I called him on it, and he didn't seem to care or take it on. Low character. Be careful magicians. These are the people who rise through the ranks to bully everyone in local clubs and major organizations. By the way, Oscar also seems to have some personality disorders that require meds that he might not be taking regularly. In these circumstances, I would say 'take the meds'. Jimmy Fingers |

I have no respect for Mr. Munoz either, but my reason is not germane to the Tabary situation, so I won't bring it up here.
Suffice it to say, that after 67 years as a member of the "I BOTHER MAGICIANS", I have resigned.

I've heard this through sources, but nothing definitive, no access to medical records, etc. Having emotional problems that require meds is not a bad thing. Not taking those meds is the problem.
I would think that his unwell psychological state might give him some leeway. |
