Gotta' repeat what I posted in the preceding thread: I am amazed at the lack of knowledge displayed here! I've taught my Instant Magic Square in a couple of my books - including a "memory" magic square - and hundreds over the years have told me that the best magic square presentation they'd ever seen is on Vol. 4 of my "Best Ever" DVD set. You guys gotta' start reading (and viewing) the good stuff!!! (I teach squares in REPUTATION-MAKERS - re-written in LORAYNE: THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, Vol. 2 (The Memory Magic Square and The Instant Magic Square), and in THE MAGIC BOOK (and in LORAYNE: THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, Vol. 4). That's great to hear! We just switched off daylight savings time in the U.S. and we can use more light. Not to mention more enlightenment on your magic square routine.

I might also add that I have recently purchased both of Jimso's (Jim Solberg) relatively new books on magic squares and I am enjoying them now. As an aficionado of magic square methods I believe I have most if not all of the literature on magic squares. Authors such as Harry Lorayne, Mike Daniels, Doug Dyment, and of course Hans-Christian Solka along with many other notable individuals have all inspired my interest and usage of magic squares. I do find it amazing that considering the long history of magic squares, methods are still being developed that offer new and innovative ways to construct them or offer refreshing alternative ways.

The new version of Melencolia is a wonderful addition to the rich body of literature on magic squares. The first version was good, but this one is better. The method has been extended to be considerably more versatile. Dr. Solka was generous in offering this as a free revision, because he could have sold it as Melencolia 2.0.

I started this thread with an announcement about my own new book, but I am happy that it has expanded into a more general discussion of recent advances. Anyone who thought that the last word on magic squares had already been written have a lot to catch up on. I am confident that there are still many discoveries yet to be found.

Melencolia is updated to version v. 2.70.
Chapter 4 "The modified Duerer's magic square" was extended and new ideas are included in chapter 11.
