I saw a show in Edinburgh last week.
The performer (whose blushes I will spare) began a book test by holding up a dictionary. "This is a dictionary," he said. "Has everybody seen one of these before?" This was five minutes after he introduced himself by saying, "I'm from [large english-speaking country}. Has everybody heard of it?" And no, he wasn't joking. It was just lame verbiage. |

Wow. I'd be a hypocrite if I too-quickly removed myself from this, but I think many of us just don't REALLY STOP and think about the words we use.
His face isn't really this long in-person!

As for the intro line... maybe his delivery is just weak? But you think he was serious, which makes it far less forgivable. |

I've used far worse lines like "This is a dictionary, for the young people in the audience its like autocorrect without the auto"

I'm sure I'm guilty of having some questionable scripting moments. I don't think any of us are immune.

How about overused ones? "Look at me!" I guess this is supposed sound like you need to gaze into their soul but to me comes accross as a plea for attention.

I think it's a perfectly legitimate question to ask of the Scots. Followed by "Are any of you sober?" and "Why are you blokes all wearing skirts?"
All spoken very loudly and slowly, to make sure they understand you. |

Maybe he was just a little nervous?
Have any of you been nervous before? |

I really don't think it's good form to openly criticise a contemporaries routine, even if it is just a dodgy line. Without knowing what the English speaking country was, it's impossible to fairly comment. As for the dictionary, I imagine plenty of young folk have probably never seen one. I've heard FAR worse lines, not that I'm going to name them.

I think it was Gene Anderson who I first heard suggest to record (not video) your shows to listen to later. I've never actually done it but I'd guess it would be quite the education.

I once asked for the spectator to read the title of the book and after he did I said "well done.. you can read". Although this got laughs.. I felt like an absolute knob because I didn't even want to say that...not even as a joke..it just came out by accident..
