I remember once the late great Daryl said that if he was at a booking with a huge amount of tables and he only had time for one effect he would perform his 3 fly 111 routine. He gave a few reasons ie its visual, multi phase, instant reset etc.

At the moment for me it's JJ's coin coalition with my additional kicker, like the above it has all the same qualities ie lots of eye popping magic that's easily seen, multi phased etc.

So if working tables especially the larger tables and you only had time for one effect as you had lots of tables to do what would be the one effect you would choose ?

Probably Ring and Rope.

Because you can make it long or short and you could do different moves on the adjacent tables and of course you could mix it up with Visual Rope like the Eskimo YoYo etc...
So, one trick but lots of quick and interactive ways to do it and visual for loud situations.

If it were more intimate, I'd do Ryu Susato's "Tokyo Penetration". Quick but involving and visually amazing. "Clean Thru/Clear Thru is a version of this that is available, at least the workings of it. The performance and handling are up to you.

Tough one, but it depends a bit on conditions. I would want to do something off the table, fun, at least a bit interactive and easy to follow.
I would probably have to opt for a borrowed finger ring on string, to sealed envelope in wallet. Other possibilities would be a short coin sequence followed by really big coin then bottle production (this one is a 'depends on conditions' choice); or my own card routine (yes I know what people say about cards, but it works for me).

I would consider a rope routine/ring and rope as Mary recommends, as it hits all my requirements (and I use at rope every gig, but perhaps not my number 1 choice).

I have JJs coin set, but haven't put in enough work to use it yet. I was thinking about doing an initial production and vanish with the set, along the lines of that taught by Axel Hecklau for his 3 fly Routine.

Thanks for the input, I also agree with Mary regards ring & rope work, a borrowed finger ring routine might also be a good choice although I don't think I would feel comfortable enough to borrow an item if I only had time to do one effect.

Charlie angles permitting JJ's coin set is excellent obviously not perfect in a walkaround situation but for tables I think its superb, I'm sure once you've played around with it a little and tried it out you'll get lots of use out of the set.

With regards to the cards hey if it works that's all the matters in the real world.

For me, it would Dunbury Aces. I have a strong presentational hook for it that gains interest and then comes back to have special meaning at the conclusion. It never fails to get a great (and loud) reaction.

My version of Devlish Miracle is a close second.

I almost always start with a card trick unless it is a large table and then I might start with Richard Sander's Fiber Optics (Basically Profs Nightmare on steroids).

Thanks for everyones input....it's great to hear all the different approaches to the one effect for a large table, when you can only choose one effect it certainly makes you think.

I think the invisible deck is a good choice however although the Benson bowl is a great trick due to it taking up table space combined with the center pieces etc that you get on tables when performing at say a corporate setting I don't think it's something I would perform personally but thanks for bringing the routine back to my attention.

I would avoid a gig like this, or try work out of a way to play to bigger crowds like a palour type stuff.

Although I understand your point of view that wasn't the question as sometimes if booked especially through an agent things aren't always as they are supposed to be and you have to be prepared to adapt, however that's another topic and not what this thread is about.

I would agree with Warren (and probably would not want to turn down a reasonable gig).
In my experience, you often (at least in the UK), get booked for corporate events, charitable balls, weddings, dinner & dances etc. The booker expects you to get around all the tables in often very challenging circumstances, with background noise and between courses.. Tables are normally 10-12 tops and covered in stuff with center pieces.

I love Benson bowl routines (Roberto Giobbi and Werner Sietz's routines are great), but table space on such cluttered spaces is next to non-existent. I have been looking at an elevated chop cup routine (credit to Mark Shortland) using a pad on a wine glass, but haven't figured out how to make the Benson bowl work at height.

Another idea I have been thinking about, but have not used around tables (yet) is Bill Abbott's Stabbed and Shot. Having worked some events a few years in a row, its good to have options.

If you know it going to be table after table banning it out you could have some fun making it a challenge. Like put a egg timer on the table and do 6 card tricks in 2 min then at the end you cant find the card and ask how long you have the crowd will see the card under the timer.
Enjoy your magic,

and let others enjoy it as well!
