I've come across a couple of tricks recently, I don't want to reveal the names of them but I'm really interested in the materials used to gaff the cards, as I'd like to try making a gaff card myself for something. I've tried googling generally and searching in the Café and can't see an obviously relevant post.
Essentially it's some way of making two cards temporarily stick together, allowing you to peel them apart. I know that it's not wax based or double double sided tape, it's described as being a "special adhesive". With the following 2 properties: - "under regular light is invisible" - "adhesive that acts like a post it note" - strong enough to drop two cards stuck together without them coming apart - weak enough that the cards can be separated by peeling without excessive force I can certainly see in a video that it's only visible at a certain angle that the light hits it. So I'm wondering essentially if anyone knows what this may be, or have come across a good way of applying a sticky surface to a card that in typically invisible to the naked eye (double sided tape obviously doesn't work! especially when you try dab it on something to lessen the stick). |

Matthieu Bich mentions a way to do this in his Penguin Live lecture. As I recall he only applies the spray glue to two small areas (opposite corners), instead of the whole surface. Richard Sanders has a variety of effects which also seem to use this idea - but his area of application of the adhesive is different from Matthieu Bich. I have also read Bill Abbott has a special substance but it is being kept secret. Another area of investigation is Magneato Cards - if you can find thin enough neodymiums - but probably very hard to build.
If you only need to make a few cards, try 2 very small pieces of DS tape (5mm x 5mm), in diagonally opposite corners. Press them a few times with the fingers to lessen the stick. Or the 3M repositionable spray glue - seems to be the most popular. |

Thanks Bill08, I might take a look at the 3M spray glue. One of Richard Sanders effects was actually the one that got me thinking originally.

You might also ask around at print shops; I sometimes get mailers with a membership card or other item stuck fairly tightly to the main brochure or letter, but the "glue" isn't notably sticky once the card is peeled off.

This stuff is expensive but has some very interesting properties:

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I managed to come across some other threads too on here. At the moment I've decided to give a Zig 2 way glue stick a try. It looks similar so far (though not as strong as the stuff Richard Sanders uses) so will see how I go.
