Hi,
Just wondering if there is any difference between these two for women. "Brotherhood" kind of stuck out at me, but I understand it was named a long time ago. Any thoughts regarding whether to join one, the other, or both? Thanks |

Here in Sacramento, many belong to both. The only difference is the location of meetings.

Thanks - anyone with two X chromosomes have any input?

I think we all just ignore the "brotherhood" thing, understanding that it is an old name, though it sure would be nice if they indicated their equal welcome of women by changing that term.
Rings or whatever vary from place to place for women. Many places there are no women at all. A few are welcoming to ladies. Many are a bit paternalistic when a woman wanders into their space, and women feel uncomfortable, or not fully welcomed. Many do not take women seriously. But some are fantastic. It just depends, as there is tremendous variation around the country. There is virtually no outreach to women by either national organization. But I think awareness is dawning in many areas, and it's getting better. Slowly, very slowly. I belong to both, but I frankly don't go to meetings because I feel so many eyes on me, and am treated differently. Not poorly, just differently. Like a specialty act, or something. I can't really define it, sorry, I don't give it that much thought. But it's enough to have me spend my time at the Magic Castle, where I do feel welcome, rather than at these meetings (even though some of the same folks are there).

Got it, Dana - thanks.
This all got in my head with the news of the Boy Scouts accepting girls. I'm pretty sure both have magic badges though. I will be interested to see if / how all this plays out. I wonder if it's worth starting a women-centric magic club or even just a meetup, or if that's just a niche within a niche... Anyway, thanks again. |

And in Asia, there are female magicians in equal numbers to male magicians. The problem here in the west is a social/cultural one. We're not looking for separate but equal. Instead we want to be recognized and included as magician equals, who just happen to be women, the same way some magicians happen to be blond, or old, or skinny, or tall. That said, I'm on the board of directors of the Women Magicians Association, and the newly created Women In Magic committee for the Academy of Magical Arts. Our mission is to raise awareness and inclusion to the point where women magicians are accepted as equals and exist in numbers equal to men, as it already is elsewhere in the world. I think we stand at the dawn of the age of the female magician. So many men are becoming aware, and inclusive, and even champions for women magicians, we are poised to make great strides. But it's a slow process.

I have heard that female magicians are much more common in Asia and that, historically speaking, parlor magic was just considered another art, like music or painting.
I had no idea there was a Women Magicians Association. That is great to hear. In full disclosure, I am a guy, but I was raised with strong feminist ideals by my mother and now have a daughter of my own. She's only 8, but is showing some interest in magic which made me think about what kind of support there might be in the world for her as she continues on her magical journey. It makes me so sad to hear that girls hit a certain age and start dropping out of various activities. I try to coach her to be true to herself. Thank you again for your insights and for your work on the front line. |
