Typically beginners do not know what an "engaging script" is, as this comes with experience and understanding that only comes from performing. An "engaging script" on paper will not always be engaging (as expected) on stage to a rea audience. Also, as I detail in my books on Open Mics, I think advising someone to ask questions can be very dangerous to a new performer. You never want to set a new performer up to be heckled or lose control, which asking most types of question will do, especially in an open mic venue where it is very casual and alcohol is strongly present with most audience members. Same for telling someone just to improv or "wing-it", it can be more detrimental and beneficial in the beginning. You want to maintain control as much as possible and when you ask questions, especially the wrong type of questions (which most new performers do) it can cause loss of control and often rattle a new performer. Stick to the basics, don't try to get too fancy, stick to what you know and have rehearsed. THEN, once you have this in place, tweaked and have some experience under your belt you can try to add other elements into your performance. |
