I know Rubinstein has a reputation for being a purist and I also enjoy the likes of Rune Klan, Reed McClintock, Curtis Kam, Brendan Wolf and Kainoa Harbottle. I'm interested to know if there are any other knuckle busters/purists out there that I should be studying? Thank you.

What do you mean by "purist"? NO gaffs? Because most of these guys employ the use of gaffs along with their sleight of hand.
I would recommend Gary Kurtz for sure. Also, anything from Geoff Latta. Get CoinMagic and the NYCMS DVD's |

Not so sure that "knucklebusters" and "purists" are always the same things as to coin magic. While Doc would probably be considered a purist, I've never looked at his work as especially knucklebusting. Some of the guys you mention here, their work was considered such because of the difficulty of some of the moves. Nowadays, and of late, you would find that sort of thing in like a, Ponta The Smith's work and the smooth-move craze he created, perhaps even harder stuff to pull off as gracefully as he shows it.
As to who to study, well all those guys are worthy, but there are many others that provide a variety of material that would meet either or as to these topics you speak of. Some may even appear as purists but mix in a little something at times to do what they do. I think of Eric Jones here, who recognizes how gaffs can enhance coin magic, but he is as clever and talented with just regular coins as anyone you mentioned. Vinny Marini here on the Café doesn't use gaffs almost ever, and has always provided wonderful coin magic. I wonder at times is anyone supposedly knucklebusting any more than what Sylvester The Jester does with a few silver dollars?...Imagine the precision that must be going on to make what he does happen in real time. Or Mickey Silver with all the fine magic he shows through the use of retention of vision...Or even Giaccomo Bertini's fabulous work. I'd say they all are purists, doing some knucklebusting stuff. Amazing, and it's all stuff that very few people do and or do well. Also notice that you didn't mention, David Roth here...He is the consummate worker that mixed it all together at warp speed behind incredible creativity and contribution. His mighty works should be studied relentlessly. Oh, and welcome to the Café, Grip.

As for mentioning Mickey Silver and Mano Tejeda, their stuff is absolutely amazing, but neither has any instructional material published. I would purchase anything from both of these coin masters in a minute! But there's nothing available yet...
In the meantime, David Neighbors has a lot of material out there and I would place David up there in the same neighborhood (pun definitely intended!) as most of those mentioned above with regard to coin magic. Thanks! Jim |
