I really liked this lecture. Lots of food for thought regarding creativity, originality and good theater. It's refreshing to see how he fills the stage, theatrically, while using little more than business cards, prop wise, and essentially no gimmicks at all. Just classical methods and excellent routining.

Very good stuff, highly recommended.

Just started re-watching this and there was some really great advice on creativity that I partially missed the first time.
He was talking about taking walks, how if he's working on new ideas or new concepts he tries to get lost or walk in new areas. For practicing script or mental routines, he walks the same route every time.

Great lecture, watch it if you haven't already.

Yeah, Im surprised there hasn't been more talk about this lecture on here. I really enjoyed it! The one thing Im definitely taking away from it was his trick with the "runes".

I think perhaps it's a statement about the average denizen of the Café these days. Fernando is not particularly well known here in the English speaking world, and his focus is not on interesting new methods or nifty gimmicks, but rather good theater.

There is so much food for thought in this lecture, I really think it was one of the best of 2017.

It is a great feeling realising that some people got something out of the lecture.

It is also cool that everybody that approached me so far remembered different moments or details from the lecture. That means that I managed to resonate with different people on different levels and that was exactly my main goal this time!

Welcome to the Café Fernando!

I was very much inspired by your decision to not use a pad for the most part in your revelations. It really helped to create a variety in terms of theatrics.

Did you view that as an artificial constraint to stimulate creativity? Or do you really dislike using the pad...

Stuart: I was considering it Smile But its quite a daunting task... but I imagine well worth it in the end. My brain is just mush after I come home in the evening, so I've yet to find time to sit down pondering these lists.

I think the reason for such little response here is few may be familiar with him and more so that no one has actually discussed the contents of the lecture - who is it for - stage or closeup, magic or mentalism, what type of material is covered, and so on?

Seems some are expecting a great conversation yet no one is sharing what the topic is or the contents. I think more people would buy this if there was a better understanding to determine if this applies to them as a performer or their interests.

It's 100% mentalism, mostly intended for stage/parlor/stand up, but much is also applicable to close up.

Method wise, it's fairly minimal. Most is done with business cards or billets. However, the main thing that is so impressive is the creativity in presentations. He creates great theater that fills the stage. Of particular note - for the most part, he chooses to eschew the traditional pad of paper for revelations and finds some really interesting alternatives.

Beyond that, he has some very inspiring and thoughtful ideas on creativity, for instance, using artificial constraints to stimulate lateral thinking.

I think that this lecture is going to be especially interesting to more experienced mentalists since the focus is on creating theater and not so much on clever new methods. Having said that, the methods are all practical and deceptive and like I said previously, mostly use business cards/billets.

I checked out the description on Penguin. Fernando appears to have advanced a couple of effects I already perform. So with that discovery, and what some of you have aid about the insights on presentation, I sprang for it.

I devoted most of yesterday to working through this video from Penguin. It is a good 75 to 90 minute presentation. Unfortunately, Penguin seems to have told Fernando to stretch it into at least four hours. I lay this on Penguin, because Fernando's own performing philosophy steers toward minimalism--in props, time, etc. I have a half-dozen Penguin lectures; most of them are too long, this is excessively long. Near the end, moderator Dan Harlan even referred to it as "a marathon session."


Too many dealers seems to promise volume as a marketing technique. Great "value" is suggested by a four-hour lecture or an 80 page pdf. Then the buyer discovers two or more hours of fat, or more white space than a blizzard.

In this video, you do get to see an approach to mentalism performed and explained by a Spaniard. Spanish magicians and mentalists seem to have carved out a distinct sub-culture, approach, and contribution. And the devotees of virtually no-prop mentalism will see a master in action. He uses business cards, in once case cut-in-half business cards, and occasionally branches out into envelopes, a sheet of paper, or a legal pad.

The performer exudes Spanish charm, his command of English is usually quite adequate, and he demonstrates and explains his effects, and his philosophy, quite well.. If you wade through the four hours, you will find more than an hour of worthwhile material.

Personally I was very happy that it was so in depth, I didn't have any problem with the length and I didn't feel that there was really any filler, but I can certainly understand your perspective. We both agree that he is talented and contributes excellent material to the field.

I have already done some work on it but it is not completed and I am now focused on different ideas so it would be helpful working with a team to find the proper lists (not as easy as it sounds!)

Hello again Matt.
Sorry for the late reply but... I suck at keeping the pace on forums and social media Smile (and I've been on the road for the last six months, finally going home for a couple of months after Blackpool).

One of the things I love about the feedback on my lecture is that everybody who told me something about it has pinpointed different aspects of it so, apparently, there is something for everybody!

In your case, and talking about pads, there are some points that I consider foundations for my approach:
- Practical... Because I am a mess I kept finding myself with empty covers with no papers left inside before a gig! Stress levels skyrocketing!

- Ecological... I am not a cheap guy but I never liked watching mentalists throwing again and again paper on the floor that has only been used to write a letter.

So that's why I started using portable whiteboards I found in Staples. Cute, affordable, portable, always ready, reusable...
(Then I considered that the amount of plastic and other products used to manufacture those whiteboards is much bigger than some hundred pieces of paper, but that's another story).

- Artistically... There is a quote from Henri Matisse: "Much of the beauty that arises in art comes from the struggle an artist wages with his limited medium".

This is a sentence also quoted by Kiko Pastur in his highly recommended Penguin Lecture. He only uses a regular deck of cards for his whole 120 minutes theatre show.

Metaphorically speaking when you use every medium, or every tool, or every fictional magical super power you keep growing wider and wider.
But when you restrain yourself to only one item (business cards...), or only one fictional magical super power ("I can only make objects disappear" for example) then instead of wider you start growing deeper.

There's nothing better or worse with this approach (well, I think there is, but this might be for another post).
It's like having one night stands with many different women or falling in love with the same woman for years.
It's like being the master of history in North Cambodia in the early twenties or be an historian.
- You get to discover new things and hidden details that other people didn't stop long enough to realise.

What I really dislike about the pad is not thinking how to use it.
From the minute 120 in the lecture I explain my points of view and, yeah, it's quite long, but I think I cover there most of my ideas on the topic.

Most of the time what I do at home is: "What if..?"
What if I don't have a pad, what if they don't write down, what if it is not me revealing, what if...
and then I apply these questions to my very own routines or to the ones I read and study.

This morning I have arrived to a whole new approach to Confabulation routines just by asking me some of those questions and I'm so happy that I think I will spend most of my night today working on that over and over again Smile

Wow, you guys! Thanks for the heads up on this. I will definitely be picking up Fernando's lecture. I worked as a professional mentalist and then let it go for (what turned out to be) dumb reasons. But now I'm back, dusting off lecture notes and books and trying to get back up to speed. This sounds like just what the doctor ordered!
