“Winner of the ‘Fool Us Trophy’ from Penn & Teller’s Fool Us”

You will probably recognize David Parr from his appearance on the hit CW Network TV show “Penn & Teller: Fool Us.” In an episode titled “Does This Trick Ring a Bell?” David’s magic skills were put to the ultimate test in front of the cameras, a live audience of hundreds, millions of TV viewers, and two very savvy magicians. (Spoiler alert…) He totally fooled Penn & Teller and took home the coveted “Fool Us trophy” and won a guest spot in their live show in Las Vegas!

David Parr is the creator and costar of Chicago’s longest-running magic show, The Magic Cabaret, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year! The Magic Cabaret was chosen by the Travel Channel as one of the top nine magic shows in the nation! During Halloween, David can often be found haunting atmospheric locations with original shows such as Haunting History, a guided tour of the shadowy territory where history meets myth and folklore, and Visions of Poe, an interactive journey into the tales and poems of Edgar Allan Poe. Among magicians, David is best known for his theatrical performing style and his writing and teaching skills. He is the author of several very well-regarded books for magicians and, for a decade or so, David was a featured columnist, proofreader, and editor for the world’s top magic journal, MAGIC Magazine. His thought-provoking writings about the art of magic have also been featured in publications in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Australia, and Sweden. Jon Racherbaumer included David on his short-list of “notable theorists” in magic, alongside Tommy Wonder, Juan Tamariz, and René Lavand. David’s first book for magicians, Brain Food, was a magical bestseller and continues to appear on lists of must-read magic books. A second book, The Magic Mirror, co-written with Dr. Robert E. Neale, received great reviews and quickly established itself as a classic in the literature of magic theory. David has provided guidance and instruction to magicians around the world, including at Hollywood’s prestigious Magic Castle, and in a Penguin Live online lecture. He has also released a number of his inventions to the magic market, including A Game of Life & Death, Proof Positive, 7 Sins, and Slow-Motion Swindle. His latest offerings are Paper Prophecies, an ebook in which he teaches three amazing prediction effects that can be performed with special props printed directly from the book’s pages, and Brain Food: Gourmet Edition, an updated digital version of his highly acclaimed first book!

David Parr’s Magic Lecture, “Transcending the Puzzle,” questions “Can magic be more than a puzzle that demands a solution?” and the answer is “Yes!” David examines the techniques he uses to encourage the people in his audience to move beyond the puzzle mentality, so he can involve their mind in something other than trying to uncover his methods. In the process, David shares routines from his acclaimed publications Brain Food, Paper Prophecies, and A Game of Life & Death, as well has some special material that he has been keeping up his sleeve! There will be magic with cards, money, poison, predictions - and plenty of weird, wonderful fun! This is a more than a lecture of mere tricks. This is a lecture that will make you think about your magic! He will talk about philosophy, meaning, creativity, misdirection and much, much, more!

Regarding “David Parr’s Brainfood Book”- “These are perfect lessons, for all magicians, in how careful thinking really can improve our magic.”-Eugene Burger “Great advice, the kind that 95 percent of people don’t think about, but it contains the real secrets of magic as a successful art.” -Andrew Basso “What I appreciate most is David’s thinking about our art. His book Brain Food has the qualities of what we can label a gourmet meal: good food, good drink, good company, and good conversation. I am quite taken with his style. His creations illustrate his engagement with the people in his audiences. So also do his conversations in this book. It is thoughtful, to be sure.” -Robert Neale “Dinner with the Borgias is one of the most entertaining, theatrical, intelligent presentations for Just Chance that I’ve ever come across. I’d love to see more writing like this about stand-up performance material, but the sad honest truth is that most of it just doesn’t have this level of depth or thought behind it.” -Anthony Owen “Mr. Parr writes clearly and intelligently, and what he has to say will make you think.” -Michael Close
