How do you join the Facebook group? [/quote] Scroll to the bottom of the Instructions. People are so creative and imaginative. Many have suggested routines that are ideal for parlour or large stage shows as well as perfect for close-up situations. Remember, DFB is a TOOL not a trick. Therefore there are many uses and like the TT can be used to fool people in many different ways. |

I have a few of the best apps around to be honest but never use them much . It’s magicians guilt probably but I always feel when a phone is used technology is presumed . Other spectators can’t even see what’s going on at the table and older people often screw it up as they either can’t see or have to bugger about getting their glasses out etc to see what the person you chose who had glasses on can see . They sometimes screw it up by not even really understanding what Wikipedia etc etc is and if you ask them to put their age in an app they lie anyway . So these apps have their place but massive limitations imo Tarik 🙂

Local magicians in my neck of the woods get these apps and have fun for a week or two before moving on to something else...not much different than any magic related effect we can purchase or download.

Tarik; Rocky, I'm guessing you don't own this effect. I agree with you as to many of these high-end apps. But as Roblane said, DFB is never remotely connected with an app, nor ANYTHING that is unique to your phone. That last statement is important.

Gabelson I appreciate this and I realise this could be ( and probably is ) much different and very very useful . I am just not a fan of any smart phone being introduced into any magic routine borrowed or otherwise . However I would and will for sure check this it out live at some point with one of my magic
pals . Best wishes Tarik 🙂 |

I must admit that I very rarely use apps in a paid performance with the possible exception of Toxic + which I use either in conjunction with a standard add a number pad (added up by a spectator using their own phone) or in my other routine I use the subtlety that I cover in my lecture (and also in Devil in Disguise 2). I do use them extensively in casual performances.
However a lot comes down to simple spectator management. I wouldn’t even like to try and count the number of times I have used either IUYM, Cypher or Toxic + to get someone’s birthday and so far I have never had a single person lie. Pass codes are a different matter, I have had people lie about their phone pass code and have a strategy to cover that in HC2. Like with most techniques or gimmicks it comes down to how you structure and layer the routine and also how you justify the information they are providing it and the medium regardless of whether that medium in a pad, a billet, a calculator or a phone. If it makes complete and utter sense for them to use that medium they are far less likely to suspect it. If one minute you are having them write in your notepad and then the next minute you have them note it down into the notes app on your phone their spidery sense is going to start tingling .... unless you give a logical and credible justification for the switch to a different medium. Technology can be very deceptive if used correctly and very transparent if used in a lazy way. For example if I use the toxic force the output of the calculator is often used as a starting point rather than an end point. Force a number and show that you predicted the number and they have nowhere to go other than you used technology to force the number. However if you force a number and then have them use that number as a starting point to get them to somewhere else, by the time they get to the destination all they remember is a series of free choices, many of which were made after the technology has been put away. Technology is the modern day billet, much of the same criticisms that are now made against technology have been made against billets eg surely if they write it down and you reveal it people will suspect the technology (in theis case the billet .. you must have read). Like with any tool, misused technology can be transparent, but used wisely it can be devastating. Mark |

I agree Mark if used early for a force in a routine I am sure it will fly by but the justification for writing something down on a billet is more conclusive and justified
in my opinion because a) to show other spectators what’s written otherwise you ( the performer ) may hear the number , name , word etc b) just in case you change your mind or you are the sort of person which I don’t think for one second you are who would try to mess the effect up as unbelievably some spectators do It’s largely probably as I said magicians guilt from me though as at a paid gig it just to me at least seems almost wrong to use an app or to introduce a smartphone that they have probably been staring at all day . I want to take them away from their phones for a bit in performance as otherwise everyone might start checking their texts and emails etc so I wouldn’t want to encourage them more by using one . Best wishes Tarik 🙂 |

Electronics and apps are here to say and do offer some terrific options if they are used sparingly. However, extra care needs to be taken when structuring routines to avoid your audience making a direct connection (a link between the two).
As an example, I performed my Mind Buster at a show this past December. I explained to a woman that I wanted her to write her phone # on a napkin. So, I handed her a beverage napkin and pen and walked away. Then suddenly realizing (use your best acting skills here) that it will be difficult to write on the thin napkin without a table. I paused and told her to hang on a second while I walked back to may case to retrieve a clipboard. Of course, I was handing her the MB clipboard. But had I done the opposite by handing her the napkin pre-attached to the clipboard then it might have aroused more suspicion. The goal is to not put too much emphasis on the clipboard, app or whatever. |

To the younger generations who largely interact with the world through a 5 inch screen the phone may actually seem more justified. In our day we would pass a note down the class to a friend, our kids simply send a text. I’m sure you and I could come up with some great justifications over a beer next week. Mark |

Yes Mark I agree , justifying the amount of beer we consume sometimes would probably be more difficult . I look forward to it 🙂
