Around the end of the year, in most recent years, there is a flurry of nominations, votes, and discussion around what mentalists have experienced as the year's "best" props, effects, DVD's, books, etc. (In our early years into mentalism, some of us even relied on that reflection to guide a purchase, or two.)
That has not happened this year. I am wondering why. I have a couple of hunches, but am more interested in how the community perceives this omission. George |

I think it's much harder now that more and more reviewers get their stuff for free and never have a bad word for any of it...so it renders the votes void as far as I'm concerned...

Yes, we have learned to read many "reviews" cum grano salis. I am referring to the end-of-year "votes" for products in which many mentalists participated, even as recently as last year.
To cite what may be a parallel incident: Jheff, in his Marketplace of the Mind, has offered a "top 10" list in recent years. This is mid-January and no sign of that, at least yet, this year. Why? George |

Seconding IAIN's explanation. Whether it be an upswing in sales, or an update to something or other.
It still makes my glorious, glorious whiskers twitch a bit, though. |

It was posted in the Marketplace of the Mind forum a few weeks ago and available to those with forum memberships. The plan is to be sending it out to those who subscribe to my free newsletter after this holiday weekend. Those who follow my newsletters though should be able to guess correctly what my top recommended mentalist product for 2017 is. - Jheff

Thanks, Jeff. I found it!
It took me awhile to find it. It is in Jheff's Forum section, and if you scroll down way past the A-Z reviews and the Journal, there it is very near the bottom. And it is well done and, as is typical for Jeff, makes good sense. But to focus on the initial question of this thread, I am still wondering about the Café membership's lack of interest in a "best" vote and discussion for 2017. George |

Talking to many at Mindvention, the feeling seemed to be it was a pretty flat year as far as anything mentalism-wise to get excited about. I think also the fact that so many people are releasing just anything the quality of releases has dropped and it has soured many.
Were there many great or exciting releases to the community this past year? Seems like a lot of continuation releases and updates from previous releases but I don't remember anything that got many excited about or that swept the community. Also yes, participation on the Café is down by 50% or more, and with the mentalism bandwagon having left town, I think this all plays a factor to some degree. |

Nothing good came out in 2017 and 2018 looks no better. Try going back to the 70s for the best in mentalism.
No matter how many times you say the wrong thing, it will NEVER be right.

What are you people talking about?
There were major works released in 2017. The works were not advertised through shops and did not appear on the Café. Just because most of you who think you are in the know and are really not does not mean anything other than no one told you of those releases. Some of which contained new principles and I not just referring to my works either. There was some great stuff that flowed on the underground last year. Mentalism releases went back to the older model of publishing works. If you look at mentalism and how it was marketed over the last century you will see this same cycle repeat again and again. I will say with the advent of rapid transfer of information the historical time line is off about 13 years from the normal cycle. In fact the cycle is pushed forward about 13 years. |

On Jan 13, 2018, George Hunter wrote: Not everyone sees what you're seeing, George, as many reading this probably didn't subscribe to the Journal of the Mind when I was publishing it. Also, it's weird that you found it at the bottom as it should have been pinned to the very top. That's how I see it when I view the forum. To make it easier, though, I just made a separate section that contains all the past year's top product articles (including 2017) so it's easier to find. As to your question, 2017 was definitely not as rich a year as others. But anyone who thinks that there was nothing released in 2017 to get excited about missed many items that I, for one, was excited about. That may be a good thing because then I may be able to actually use them in performances and not worry about hundreds of other mentalists and magicians doing them.... - Jheff

I only reported what I was seeing, and reported how I found it. It was more than worth the search. George |

Not sure what some of you have been smoking. How or why people are saying that there wasn't anything released worthwhile? There were some phenomenal releases.
Max Maven's Kayfabe (a 4 disc set) was released. You get to see a master give an entire stand up show. He then has an interview where you get to hear decades of advice and history of the art. Anthony Blake had his DVD release. Equally a master who shared tons of valuable material. Luke Jermay's marked deck, along with his limited edition book that goes with it (Voyages) was a huge hit. The structure and scripting alone in that book was worth ten times the price. The best release of the year for me was Looch's Close Call lecture (a lecture on how to perform close up mentalism in walk around and strolling situations). This is something that is surprisingly NOT as easy as one might think. Releases like this are truly priceless. For anyone wanting to get some inside information from a master of this field, Looch is your guru. There were several more releases as has been said above that were not advertised by mainstream magic companies just looking to make a quick buck by ripping of the creators. I'm just about finished supporting magic companies all together. Support the artists and creators by buying directly from them if you can. Best, Matthew |

As I have read the thread I started, no one has seriously claimed that "nothing" worthwhile was released in 2017. While some have suggested that there isn't as much in 2017 as some years, my only question was Why there wasn't a "best" list this year.

Why not start one yourself rather than ask why there isn't one?
