Just wanted the Café workers to enjoy a lively conversation about mostly everything, with the indefatigable Harry Lorayne here: https://www.patrickcoffin.media/a-better......er-life/ (This the right forum?)

Just listened to this superb podcast. Makes me love Harry even more. Education in the school of hard knocks can be more valuable then people think. What Harry did early on was what most collage graduates never do and that is apply what you learn and are most passionate about. Such a gifted writer and person in general.
To quote Jack Paar "Amazing, amazing, amazing"

Interesting ... especially the part (1:00:00 and on) where he says that after been banned from this Forum, he stated he wasn't coming back again...
I wonder what made him change his mind ... Mark |

Thought I'd better come back so that I could see some of the every-once-in-a-while great posts here. That - and so many begging me to come back. Have I assuaged your curiosity, Mark?

Great interview. It lead me to find as many Youtube videos of Harry on TV as I could. Unfortunately, the Parr show isn't available but there is a really early "I've got a Secret" that is likely a very similar appearance.
Harry Lorayne on "I've Got A Secret" Harry, I'm curious. How did you know you could remember 500 people? Before you did a TV appearance what was the most names you had ever tried? Also, did you find this act to be strenuous? Did you ever fail? |

There's also one of my appearances with Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show somewhere on the internet.

Just received a call telling me how. I'm a terrible computer person. Go to Google and type in
Harry Lorayne/Tonight Show. Yep; that did it.

MeetMagicMike: Difficult to answer - it just grew and grew. Before I did the names & faces thing on television - I always opened my personal appearances with it. So, can't be exact, but did perhaps 25, then 50, the 75. The most I ever did - when I knew I could and when I had the time to meet 'em all - I did a thousand.
I learned eventually not to do more than 300 or so - because otherwise the audience's thinking would be - Okay, what else do you do!! Yes; it was mentally strenuous but also very exhilarating and ego feeding - I'm a ham, I love applause and standing ovations!! I never, ever, failed so far as my audience was/is concerned. I'm a good coverer-upper and a good "never admit a mistaker" - I'm the same when doing card magic - I never admit that something went wrong - always continue as if that's exactly what I intended.

My firs,t appearance on the Jack Paar Show I was going to meet and call off everyone in the audience no matter what, no matter how many. That's because Mr. Paar was not thrilled to have me on - Moss Hart had told him that "if you don't put HL on your show I will never do your show again." And just before show time, Paar said to me - "Just do a few people, six or seven, on each of the two isles, Pal, I'm only gonna' give you about six or seven minutes." That's all I needed to hear!

This is such an important point. You're there to entertain people not have them feel sorry for you. I've learned so much more than card tricks from your writings. Thanks |

My girlfriend was visiting and I played magic dvds all night. She could care less and was getting ****ed.
Then...I put on Harry's Best Ever DVDs. Amazing, her change in attitude....now she was being entertained by a master. Her attention was riveted to the TV. There is still so much to learn from this incredible performer. I am a books first first guy, but this video series is a revelation. Kevin |

Love this forum! First I heard of Harry was his Memory book; and it helped me in High School (we're talking 1962). Years later I come across Close Up Card Magic! It's been truly magical ever since; and I also agree with Kevin that the videos are not just educational, but very entertaining just to watch! Lynn
