Hi Guys and Girls,
I use Bicycle shim cards in my show. Kevin James sells them for something like $9 each. Does anybody know another lace to get BICYCLE shim cards? Perhaps a more interesting topic would be this -- does anybody know HOW to make shim cards? I was advised by another magician to rap the side of a card on a table until it split. I could then peel the two halves apart..... but I've had no luck. Anybody here have any tips on splitting cards cleanly and on making shim cards? Thanks so much! |

Hiya, Jim:
For whatever it's worth, I don't split cards to shim them. I use 3M Spray Adhesive and small rectangles of 0.001" steel shim stock (available at industrial hardware suppliers). Spray the back of Card "A," adhere the shim, spray the card again, and carefully position Card "B" in place. Voila! Yeah, yeah, you card guys are gonna scream "Cheater!" "Lazy Bum!" Bah. Who splits cards before doing a Do**** L***? Leland |

Thanks Leland. I'm wondering, though, whether that method would make the card too thick. I guess it depends on the effect being performed.
In any event, than you VERY much! |

To split do a search, there is guy who sells shim cards and there is a book on splitting cards.
The secret is to place the thin half on a flat surface and pull diagnally across the card, always holding the the thin half flat on the suface just in front of the tearing joint. Then scrap the surface with a razor blace to take off the fuzz and reglue with you shim in between them. Or order them from Cards by Martin. http://www.cardsbymartin.com A 22 page book on card splitting can be purchased for $10 for Martini Magic http://www.martinismagic.com/Products.html |

Martini is also releasing a DVD on Card Splitting together with some effects to go along with the produced gaffs.
There was also a good short tutorial on http://www.wowbound.com sometime ago, but I cannot find it. Can anyone help?
Yours,

You can cut shim stock with a pair of scissors.

WOW! Reviving an 11 years old thread....
Shim can be cut with scissors, but make shure to trim or bend your cuts. Here is a pic of the construction of my actual shim cards (you don't want to have a card where one can see through): https://plus.google.com/+CardMakerBerndM......kKuFCm1u
