Just A Cup, Axel Hecklau. I have many small variations on the theme, it's well rehearsed so the patter is always upbeat with room for the crucial improvisations that come your way.
It has lots of impossible outcomes built in. It's always met with bemusement, and amusement also as stated before, this establishes you as a professional while being personable. You can't go wrong. |

Curious on a more theoretical level. If we're talking table hopping / strolling, I'm assuming a 3-4 effect set with maybe some quickie gags thrown in, and an overall performance time of no more than maybe 8-10 min.
As such, I've always looked for openers that are pretty quick. When I see proposals for effects like a Chop Cup, I think they may take too much time and (for me) are better "middlers" or maybe a closer. I also look for an effect that is totally "in the hands," and requires zero, or very little, physical support from the spectator (i.e. holding something). From my perspective, the opener should get their attention, put them at ease, and entice them to want to see more. When you give them a "job" right off the bat, they are "locked in" and may feel a bit coerced, and thinking about a way out rather than focusing on the entertainment. I tend to use: Coin flurry, 3 Fly, Bill change (1 or several), 4 of a kind card production, and sometimes when there are smaller childern, a silk vanish or color change Again, these are just my thoughts regarding "openers." Any differing thoughts ? |

Some people will pretend to pick up a pocket knife, ask them if they have lost this knife and then launch into a quick color changing knife routine.

Well I think it doesn't give them a choice and in a service related industry that is always a bad thing.

For parlor type of show I open with a bottle production.
For strolling it is always Mental Photography deck. Quick, visual, no need for spectators to do anything, easy for me to evaluate reactions for future audience involvement |
