Hello, all!
I've had this account for just over 9 years now, and have been a diligent lurker ever since. I have been fascinated by magic from a very young age as a family friend was a working magician and member of The Magic Circle, but am very much a hobbyist. I'm especially interested in mentalism (having grown up watching and reading everything Derren Brown has produced), but nothing is better than being utterly, devastatingly fooled by the elegance of a good card effect. Glad to virtually meet you all, and thanks for creating such a fantastic community |

Welcome! We are glad to have you.
To break from the usual welcome to the community I shall pose a question. What got you into magic? What was that special moment that happened and made you say, like myself, “I really want to learn this.” |

Welcome Posiedon,
I lurked for quite a while too. I think it is prudent. (most lurk as non-members so you are different in that). I like Mentalism but I'm more into cards. I love being completely amazed by either. Don't worry about being a Hobbyist, most of the members here are hobbyists and Amateurs. (As are/were some of the best Magicians in the world). I will say that the Café is more fun when you are really taking part in the conversation. -Mary Mowder |

Hi Posiedon,
Welcome! I have only just started to engage on here as well! Interestingly enough, I'm similar in that my background is in card and close-up magic but my interests have moved towards mentalism over the past few years. I'm equally indebted to this community and the voices and thoughts of thousands of performers for helping to shape my growth in our art and so I would like to echo your thanks! All the best, Jack |

Thanks for the warm welcomes, all!
The family friend I mentioned had a routine that involved a presentation of Out of This World which blew me away at the age of ~7 or so. I'd also watch him rehearse particular sleights endlessly and I found the mechanical skill involved particularly impressive. He bought me a cup and ball set from Davenports, passed on his copy of The Royal Road to Card Magic, and I was hooked! I'd like to get back into card magic, so I'll be revisiting this and other texts I've accumulated over the years whilst absorbing as much other material as possible. |

Welcome Posiedon.
I have been on here for years and just started to post. Royal Road is a great book to start if cards is what you want to do. Check out the Opie Hustions Study Guides on going through the Royal Road here in the forum as it will help. Hope to see you around. |

Welcome!
I was a committed lurker for months, then just decided to have a go at contributing. 4,000+ posts later I still haven't had enough.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.
