You might want to look at the webcomic "Questionable Content." One of the sub-plots is the relationship between the humans and the "anthroPCs."

Mind you, "Pintsize" is a trouble maker.

Okay, I can kinda see that and raise you one with the comedy The Twonky but the story as written is less funny.

Read the story many, MANY years ago. Never saw the movie.

Reading the link and the imdb.com entry, apparently I didn't miss a lot.

Since you,Jonathan, mentioned R.u.R., you might be interested in watching the 1960s movie Creation of the Humanoids. Set in the far-flung future, it deals with Android friction with Human Society. If you look at the strange makeup of the Androids in that movie, that is, the blue skin and strange eyeballs, I think it would be the ideal makeup for the android-superhero Noman in the upcoming Thunder Agents movie.

Creation of the Humanoids looks influenced by R.U.R. all the way to reference of "removing a rib". Smile
T. H. U. N. D. E. R. agents? Since the announcement in 2015 there's been little in the news about that comic and property. Annother comic I did not read much into when it was on the newstands. Thanks for the reminder. Like O. M. A. C. it seems to imagine an empowered U. N. Taking bureaucracy/corporatism as functioning AI in our culture... not so far fetched.

Jonathan, did you ever read the book,As Man becomes Machine, by David Rorvik? In the 80s I used to have that book. In one chapter, as expected, he discusses the human brain transplanted into a mechanical body a la DC's Robot Man. Then he takes it to an even higher level by saying that the human brain can be dispensed with altogether by simply preserving its characteristic electrical impulses. The Ultimate, he speculates, is all the different electrical impulses coming together to form a Gestalt, the perfect union of All Humanity.

I'll look up that book in the library. That theme recalls "The World, the Flesh, and the Devil" a short book about the three great obstacles we face as a species. The second item is the body - and he explores replacing parts/whole - Smile http://www.quarkweb.com/foyle/WorldFleshDevil.pdf

They have so many documents to deliver that they use robots? I wonder what those documents are... and I'd be a little worried if our extant automata demand rights: https://www.theguardian.com/money/2018/a......-workers

It will pleasantly surprise you, Jonathan, that HBO has just begun airing Westworld, a television series based on the movies of the same name. Interesting about an amusement park using Androids. I remember seeing its movie in the 1970s and always remember the part where they show the scenes from the Android's point of view with its computerized images.

Yul Bynner stole the movie fair and square. Smile On TV... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIco8YEWg44 Crichton backed off the A. I. question a few times. His movie and TV show were technically appreciated.

I just got the David Rorvik book in paperback - will take a look.

In the mean time - is talking dirty to Siri harassment? #YouBadApple? Does fanfiction putting Siri, Bob and Alexa in a cyber situation violate more than just copyright?

Really, what if (when) TomTom(TM) tells you where to go and Google Maps(R) agrees? What if Mister Chips and NOYB (that's C3-PO and R2-D2 by their "droid" names) decide to get on with their own lives?

Glad that you got the David Rorvik book. I remember buying it during the 1970s at the same time I bought Alvin Toffler's Future Shock and Eric Von Daniken's Chariots of the Gods. Remember those books? Von Daniken became so popular at that time that it sparked off the creation of a magazine called Ancient Astronauts which I also used to buy.

Back to the topic of this thread --Androids. Did you ever see the Disney movie Not Quite Human? It was about a scientist who created an Android called Chip who would pass as a teenager in a high school. It was an experiment because he would attend high school just like any other teenager and Nobody knew he was an Android at all.

He had No Emotions so he had to learn them. For example, when a high school bully tried to bully him, he asked Chip if Chip feared him. To which Chip answered,"I don't know fear." The bully of course interpreted it as meaning that Chip was not afraid of him but Chip was simply answering truthfully that he does not know that Emotion.

Interesting book. The question of society and identity, man as "among men", a colony creature, haunts our fiction. David Eggers' book The Circle is one such. Bruce Sterling offers a comment on that topic in his story The Swarm... though the question goes back to the Tower of Babel.

Remember this book and this guy? Smile

On a related note, we need to watch out for "bogons".
Quote:

I'm surprised that Jonathan being a Star Wars fan and all, did not mention the premiere of the Han Solo film at all. Was it because he was disappointed at the film?

I haven't seen the film yet. It may be a little while... so much homework.
