Personally I like stand up monte more because it don't need a table at all
I usually perform tricks to friends when in restaurant ( but the table are usually messy in my experience) or waiting somewhere without table

With proper control, you can use spectator's hands as a table and when cards change in the spectators hands that is far better IMHO.

I'm a big fan of Royal Scam, and John Bannon in general, especially his "fractal" effects of which Royal Scam is one. But I'm not sure it's the best of the bunch. I think B'rainiac has almost as many magical moments and it hits hard and fast. As mentioned above, with Royal Scam it takes a while for all the face up face down sequences to play out and it's a bit repetitive. It's still one I carry on me most of the time.

But for overall best packet trick ever, I think I have to go with Color Monte. The green $14 kills.

The Monte script works...not sure about that alignment move. Almost worth buying another set to get an extra blue and start with an Elmsley count. Hmm... Smile

I agree ingmntoya. Brainiac is my “in the hands Royal Scam” It’s longer than NFW but shorter than Royal Scam. It gets amazing responses

Royal Scam is awesome. Paul Richards has great packet tricks too.

I've always got a kick out of royal scam from the first time I got it down pat. Took me a while.

But all of Bannon's stuff is cery well routined/constructed; well thought out. I plan to learn a WHOLE LOT MORE of John's material.

I recently learned "Spin Doctor", and I like it a lot.

I tend to work on packet effects for months before I consider them sufficiently burned into my brain to present to present to an audience.

I have to second Paul's vote for Double Back. The reactions are very powerful.

Also all the votes for Color Monte... love the story and the kicker. I don't have any issues with the alignment move. Spectators see me doing all kinds of thing with cards. I don't make a big deal out of it and neither do they. I only mention this because it's also being discussed in another thread. Of course, if you have an issue with the move that's fine. That's one thing I love about magic, we can do things differently toward the same end.

Another packet trick I love is Virginia City Shuffle. Reactions are huge.

Ultimate 3 Card Monte is great as well. Awesome reactions.

Jumbo Coincidence... another great one.

Are these BETTER than Royal Scam? Who knows? I just know what I like and what plays well for my audiences.

In one sentence, what is the effect of Royal Scam

you can youtube it.

I think the questioner's point is that the effect can't be described in one sentence. Some would consider that a problem. Your answer makes his point.

Exactly! Royal scam is pretty much as confusing as it comes. Better packet tricks that come to mind quickly Skinner Monte, Hamman twins, Bwave, Plastic lady, wild card, twisting the aces, dr daley last trick, printing ect.

It's really not a "one sentence" effect because it's a (short) multi-phase routine, but here you go:

Cards in a packet of Aces magically turn face up and face down, then the backs of four of the Aces change to all different designs and the remaining cards become a royal flush.

Love DB. It has the wonderful advantage of them actually SEEING the Kings face up in your hand, thus removing any possible doubt that they are holding the fives or that you switched them.

Great point! This makes the trick so awesome. I've had grown men react with anger to this trick before.

"That's @!#$% impossible!!!"

Not saying that is necessarily a good thing, Smile but it can stir strong emotions in people because it is just that amazing.

Exactly! Gives them no way to reverse engineer without running into a dead end. (The last sight of you holding the Kings that they now hold.)

You have seen men actually get angry??

Wow!

Yeah... twice! lol

Both times I just happened to be practicing at my desk at my old job and they said, "Show me something."

One guy got mad on the spot and one came back a full 30 seconds later to yell through the door that , "There's no #@$% way!"

He startled myself and a lady I was speaking with.

45 years ago, Color Monte was the first trick I ever bought. Even with the limited knowledge of card magic I had then, I knew that the alignment move just didn't look good, so I've never used it. I do , however, use Paul Wilson's Gypsy Monte in which he eliminates the alignment move.

Having said all that, my favorites are Double Back and Jumping Gemini, both of which get great reactions.

I haven't done Jumping Gemini in a long while. I really need to get back to it.

But I highly doubt I remember the moves. There were quite a few, as I recall. Lots of Elmsleys and such. But they all had to be inserted in the exact right spot in the routine. One misstep of your memory, and you have a disaster. (See here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=201 )

I recall the same caveat for Greg Wilson's "Weighted Aces." Beautiful and mind blowing routine, but every step has to be remembered PERFECTLY, or you screw up the whole trick.

Yeah. I sure do wish I could recall the moves for "Jumping Gemini."

I recall first learning about that one off a Michael Ammar tape, back when VHS was in vogue.

Now I no longer have the tape, nor a VHS player, so I'm screwed if I want to re-learn it. Which I do, btw, after reading this thread.
