So my wife absolutely can not stand magic (drives me freakin nutz). She's the type that cringes everytime I need a spec. or opinion. She mentioned tomorrow is Palm Sunday...... And BOOM! there I had it, and I told her "I got your Palm Sunday" (palmed 1/2) . Apparently that was not really funny to her. However, I thought it was hillarious! ......... And now to church tomorrow. I'm pretty new to the church scene, she was raised Catholic. LOL. so be ready fellas! Have a great weekend!

This may not be the best place to keep this thread going, but I'm genuinely curious - any hypothesis as to why the wifey can't stand magic or support you when asking her opinion?

*Snicker* I think the joke is great. How did it go at church?
My own wife rolls her eyes as well each time I come in and say "Check this out" or "Let me bounce something off of you." I think it's because she's so inundated with magic that it's become something of a chore, rather than entertainment. As such, she seems to *think* that she doesn't enjoy magic. On those occasions that I drag her kicking and screaming to a magic show by another performer, she has a very good time. It's not magic that she doesn't like, it's the drudgery of being a test subject...having to watch unpolished previews or the pressure of being expected to render an opinion.
Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.

I think several reasons could come into play. To my wife, ”magic” is like my secret mistress. I spend money on it. I spend a lot of time alone with it....
She liked it a little at first when I would test out a new effect but over time she wanted less and less to do with it so I don't even bother to run it past her anymore. I have my thing, she has her things I don't bother her about so it works out now. As far as jokes, I was ”the funniest guy she ever met” 25 or so years ago. Now I think everything she loved about me then, she hates about me now. I haven't changed and probably never will. She has just learned to live with a man who suffers from ”Peter Pan Syndrom”. I will NEVER grow up. All joking aside, other than that, we get along great.

Thomas: My hypo would be because she has seen a lot of it, however isn't so impressed that it entertaines her maybe. she knows a coipla things after 25 years. 🙂. Overall tho, I can see her cringe or give me the short eyeroll to herself. haha! ! does that make sense?
ok I gotta go I'll get back to this. 😀 |

I think that the wife’s attitude to magic is because you might be just demonstrating to her instead of entertaining her. I’ll bet she would enjoy watching you more if you were entertaining a crowd.
But then again, maybe you just suck. |

It maybe she is just a passive spectator and not really involved in the process in the development of the routine. I am a very lucky man, that my wife is very involved in "our" act. I will run a routine by her just to get some feed back, sometimes she doesn't like it, but always gives feedback to make it better. More times than not is almost always right!! It may help if you tell her she is part of the process to make you a better performer & entertainer. Best of luck Mark

I agree a lot of the time she is right. People can see more than you can see in a mirror or on camera sometimes, People are not stationary. I get it. Anymore I am a hobbyist, I done a ton of bar strolling when I was younger, I've done private adult parlour style shows and children shows. And again it has been sometime since performing. I appreciate the feedback. 👍. I'm not looking to be a better performer necessarily. To show a quick set to small groups 2 or 3 , I think would be fun again. 😀 But this post wasn't really about that. 😀 |
