I still have a long way to go as far as coin magic, and I always want to learn from the best. I'm seriously considering letting Roth teach me what I don't know how through the medium of DVDs and tapes.
Can anybody recommend a good place to start as far as which Roth materials to start with? Name of the DVD and dealer who carries it would be helpful. Also, one more question, please. As far as coins, is there one area of expertise, or sleight in particular where he stands out as head and shoulders above all the rest? Or, is EVERYTHING he does with coins on an equal level of excellence? In other words, what are his strong points? What is he particularly noted for above everything else? O.K you Roth experts. Time to chime in here!

There are a couple of good collections on DVD by Roth. He makes great use of the classic and retention, but sparse use of the back clip. Doug I didn't forget the Nightshades, either.

Re: I'm seriously considering letting Roth teach me...
For magic with coins, you would be very hard pressed to find a better teacher. Perhaps you could contact David Roth and ask him if he would have you as a student. He lives in NYC. There is much to learn from his publications. His choice to perform coin magic seated at a table should in no way influence your perspective on his works. If you have the basic intelligence to be a competent conjurer, the methods required to perform his routines standing will not elude you. Enjoy the Roth material, even if just to see the stuff performed. It leaves one with the feeling that anything is possible with coins.

I have too much on my platter to keep me involved with my family's needs to ever be able to travel to NYC for personal lessons. Truth is, I can't even bring myself to believe he would ever mentor me, anyway.
Reality is, I'll have to settle for video instruction, like most of us poor ********.

Do you have the Roth book Expert Coin Magic? If not that would be a good place to start as well. I do not know the DVD or video that you asked about but a good start none the less. Hey don't give up on at some point being able to take at least a few lessons from Roth at some point. Not a bad goal to have. |

Expert Coin Magic Made Easy volumes 1-3 are the first place to start if you are looking for video or DVD. I have a review of them on my website below.

Informed...okay, most of the coin tools and trick plots people are using today have a strong Roth influence. From the shuttle pass to the 'Hanging Coins'...his work. If you have not seen his showpiece tricks live, it's more fun to see the stuff in person. You could spend quite a while exploring his book Expert Coin Magic.
There is nothing like a room of magicians at a convention, all silent, listening as he does the Tuning Fork routine. Good idea to see this live.

Ultimate Coin Magic is a very decent set of DVDs. I learned much from watching them.

You will find that David is an authority with Okito Coin Box work. His book Expert Coin Magic is the definitive source on the subject.

Doug,
You can't go wrong with his book Expert Coin Magic. David's work has something going for it that many other coin magicians fail to understand. His magic fools you completely. Study his constructions, espcially the table routines like The Purse And Glass and you'll gain an understanding of how to construct coin magic. Some of his routines are so well constructed that even if you DO the routines there are moments that will fool you while you're watching them. |

I got into coin magic by reading Bobo, watching the first David Roth video put out by Tannen's. The choice of routines, explanation of sleights, are fantastic. It is pretty much all on one tape: Shuttle Pass, Retention Vanish, his own Coins thru Table, Purse & Glass, Portable Hole, his version of Chink a Chink. A ton of food for thought. Well worth the search especially if you can't afford multiple DVD sets. Joey

May I suggest, Daff', checking into Michael Rubinstein's Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights to augment your Roth collection? Then you will have as complete a set as you can get.

Which Roth DVDs are better? Ultimate Coin Magic volumes 1-4 or Expert Coin Magic Made Easy volumes 1-3
Thanks, -Niko

It's hard to say which is a better set. For those new to coin magic, the Expert set is better as it provides strong information on the fundamentals. Palms, clips, transfers and things of that nature.
The Ultimate DVDs have two strong points. First, each of the 4 in that set contain two previously released tapes. I have volume 3 of the ultimate set which contains his "Classic Showpieces" and a lecture in Sacramento. The lecture is very good, but the classic show pieces are incredible. These are the routines that made Roth who he is, and it is clear from those performances and explanations that David Roth puts a great amount of time and thought into his stuff. So if you already can handle some coins, then go with the Ultimate set, but if not, get the fundamentals first. -Chris |

I'm well past the fundamentals at this point in time. So, it looks like advanced stuff would be in order.

Ok, I'm going to start the flames, but I must say this.
Buy the Roth's book, Expert Coin Magic. Buy Bobo's Coin Magic. Do NOT buy the DVDs. You will be doing yourself a favor many times over. Looking at the post I keep seeing, "I can't afford ALL the DVDs, so which one should I get?" or "What's the BEST DVD?" You know, for the price of one DVD you can buy Expert Coin Magic and you know what? That has more material in it than the rest of the DVDs combined. You just saved hundreds of dollars. Give Denny a call at Denny and Lee's. He'll be able to help you. He's one of the few real dealers left and knows what he's talking about. You watch a DVD, you're going to be a Roth Clone. I promise. You want to stand out and really UNDERSTAND what your doing, the REASONING behind the actions, you'll get that in a BOOK. But you learn better from a DVD? Have you ever actually tried reading? We wonder why magic is going downhill. The classics is where all the good information is hidden, not in the latest DVD. Sorry for the rant, but I can't stand the current thinking in magic. You know, the real magic shop is going to go out of business as we know it. One of these days we'll wake up and realize there are no more Denny or Richard Hatch to be there for us. Magicians will be too busy watching their precious DVDs. So buy Expert, read it, use your brain and think for a change. End of rant. You guys have the floor. I'm done. Scott |

Ouch... I just placed an order with H&R and forgot to ask for a copy of the Roth book.
So far, in my return to the land of magicians... I find the videos kind of entertaining... while the older books tend to be more instructive. There are some performers I would like to see on video... as they are gone and missed. The living performers... I can probably wait to meet in person.
