I received a voice mail from a rep from Kazaam, another in a long list of web-based lead services, this one connected to "Party City" retail chain. The voicemail was cut off, so I visited the website, read the terms of service, etc. Nowhere did they inform a potential vendor of any fees or commissions, so I began the sign up process. Only after completing all of the personal information, description, pics, etc did I come to the final step of "signing up." It was only then that I was told to click a box, indicating that I accepted the 20% commission fee to be paid to "Kazaam."

Has anyone had experience with this service? While they do not require a membership fee like Gigsalad or Gigmasters, etc. I feel 20% is extreme. Any thoughts?

20% is pretty standard for lead gen.

I do this for companies direct and charge 30% (not in this industry though)

A search for Kazzam will get the site. Kazaam will get a lot of poor movie reviews.

stempleton, I see they say they provide vetted suppliers. Was there any mention to you of a vetting process during the sign-up?

If this would be connected to the local stores like allowing signage in a window or featured bulletin board in local store, it could be worth it.

There was mention to party planners of their doing a search on the national sex offenders list, but no asking of any info from me in order to allow them to do that. And yes, I agree in-store promotion of my business would definitely be worth it, but no mention of that.

And I would agree 20% would be fine for an active promoter or manager, but in light of the other online lead services I feel 20% is extreme. I tried to call but was placed on a generic muzak-infused hold for far too long.

I think 20% is too much as well.

I sent a few questions to the Kazzam info # last Monday.

I have not even received an acknowledgment of my email by Thursday.

I'll let you know when they contact me.

Shows how much they want/value your business.

They called me back, wanting to assist in completing the sign up process. When I told them I was not interested in a 20 percent commission fee structure, they said no problem, deleted my info, and said goodbye. No discussion, which is fine, but you would think a new venture would want feedback from their vendors. Apparently this is not the case.

Your feedback was you were not going to pay the fee. They will not change it so why bother further wasting everyone's time?

I agree with Danny on this one. They're probably having no trouble finding people who are perfectly happy to have the 20% fee, so why worry about one or two unhappy folks? It's a nation wide business, not a mom and pop shop down the street.

That is probably the problem.

I said in the email that 20% seemed high (along with several questions, mostly about representation in the local Party City Stores).

I suppose I expected them to explain why they thought they were worth it or at least acknowledge receipt of the email.

It's a bit surprising they didn't set up an auto-responder to verify when emails are sent. Unless that automated response got filtered on its way to you (which can happen).

I'm not shocked. Their business model is 20%. Why bother with those who want to question it and won't join?

Why should they explain anything? Does Wal-Mart explain the price of jeans?

Having been in sales, I'm used to qualifying and overcoming objections. Guess that's old school. Perhaps I was not aware of benefits not listed and/or overlooked on their website. And the service industry is somewhat different from a Walmart. But to each his or her own.

I'm not as shocked at the final outcome as I may have sounded. I just figured they would have an automatic response like Thank you for your interest, we are committed to our business model or something like that.

As Stempleton brought up, I certainly left the door open to be convinced.

I get lot of offers to come and work for free. I reply politely to all of them (even though I am fuming when they are for for profit groups like local TV channels who are offering exposure that never happens).

It simply is not how they are set up. The cost of convincing you would probably ooutweigh the benefit of convincing you.

I always wonder about the tendency to only look at things from one point of view.

For them to answer like you guys want means they need to staff for always doing so. If they are working for 20% of birthday party fees from only leads they generate seems like a huge loss to try to do so.

Clearly, at least starting out they are going for new people without client base. Not professional established performers.

I like the fact that they run a background check on their vendors. That's a smart move! Mine was completed very quickly.

You are never required to accept a gig. Honestly, if they get me booked for a good gig I wouldn't have gotten otherwise, 20% seems very reasonable to me.

My two cents only.
