We all know that to be better in magic, we have to practice, practice and practice at home, but we also need to show others our tricks which is essential to becoming better.
I always show my friends magic tricks, however, I feel that I am starting to annoy them especially when I started to learn about 2 tricks a week. Now, who can I show the tricks I learned? I'm an intermediate magician (I know around 20 really good tricks including palming, glide, top shot, pass,...) so I'm not that bad, but I am also not professional to have my own gigs. what can I do to train and experiment with my tricks? who to show my tricks? In other words, what is the step between starting to have your own routines, tricks and getting gigs? I am not ready to have real gigs. |

Great question.
I've never really found an answer that fits me and my context, but I'm odd. I guess many will suggest free or low price shows for charities, hospitals, old folks homes, etc. |

Malek.azar welcome to the Café!
If all you do is cards, it'll be a bit more difficult than if you do a variety of stuff, like coins, silks, cards, balls, mental magic. Even still, people today get bored with magic very quickly (as I have found). The "WOW" factor is gone in so many. It's why after 40 years, I now only do "impossible" stuff. Cap In Bottle, Tenyo's "Invisible Zone", Floating Ball, "Just A Cup" cup & die set...that kind of stuff. It has to be quick. Attention spans are MICRO today. And RESPECT? Almost non-existent. People grab. Yell out how they think it's done. I've had that happen too often. If all you do is cards, you will be very limited in what you can do and who you can show it to. Doug |

You might try this: find a location where people gather for fun (like a public park or a playground near a library, etc.) and set up a small sign on a table at which you will be sitting and practicing. The sign says: "Magician in Training. FREE MAGIC SHOWS!" or words to that effect. Then just sit there and practice, smiling at people who stop to watch and invite them to sit down to watch some magic. You'll need to have a good variety of tricks to present so they don't see the same trick more than once, and you'll need to learn to end the show and thank them for stopping by and helping you with your magician training, but that's actually part of your training as a magician - controlling your audience - and you can't learn it from books.

I love Mr. Gerrish's suggestion. That's awesome!
I might also suggest getting a copy of Jamie D. Grant's wonderful book, "The Approach." In it, he describes (among many, many, MANY other things) his "Magic Friday" practice. It's a great way (doesn't have to be done on Fridays, either) to get real-world experience performing for people. |

Well I'm not proud of this but I used to PAY my friends to watch. I used to invite them over on a Sunday, get snacks, give them a few bucks to not complain and go through my COMPLETE act and multiple tricks atleast twice. I would perform for atleast 6 hours. That way I got the confidence to perform and also used their constructive criticism to find the areas which needed improving.
Nowadays I don't require that much practice with real people. I just learn a trick, practice infront of the mirror or a camera, imagine all the things that could go wrong and then go out and perform it.
