Whe humping around in the field things can get a bit crazy and gear weight becomes an issue. Even a a small amont off your pack can make a difference and while most service men carry a spade of some kind it's not really necessary so long as you can make a digging stick.

Like with all multitools this spade doesn't do everything well but it can do most things OK. The whistle and fero rod are a joke but the spade head is surprisingly strong and capable of digging and LIGHT chopping. The saw teeth are OK and the spear type design would work as a selfdefense tool. Whit his and some auxiliary items I made this into a kit that I can take almost anywhere. Again I don't consider a spade ESSENTIAL gear but it can be useful and if your going to carry one, why not have one with multiple uses?

No more interest in gear?

Always interested in gear. Still researching knives. I might pick something from California while I'm down there.

I used to write for a blog under the screen name "Skills b4 Gear". While good gear can make the difference in a life and death situation NOTHING substitutes for the skills you acquire in training and experiences. Skill will also make the tools you use more useful. So buy quality gear but learn how to use it. The knowledge is the most important thing that you always have with you

I have to say I have seen guys with all the latest tech, the best gear and absolutely NO idea how to use it. SF is darn right.
I have also known guys with better training, better skill sets and little to no gear who would survive no matter what because of the skill set. This is sort of like those who buy exercise equipment, and the most exercise they get from it is bringing it in from the car and chucking it under the bed. You need to use it properly for it to be of value. Same with all survival tools as was just stated above. Very good point.

Same with magic.
I know a guy who can blow your mind with a deck of cards, or a couple of coins. Another owns a house full of props and can't palm a card. SF, it seems that the reaction to a lot of these scenarios depends on where you are when they start. After hurricane Sandy I put together a go bag, but I'm usually in the city; that's why I asked what's your survival EDC. If it's a temporary situation, I'll just hunker down and endure; but if hell breaks loose and I'm cut off from my house, then any gear is useless.

No. That's when gear becomes especially important.

That's why I asked about your EDC, since it's all you'll be able to count on.
I'm sure your house is a fortress, but what if you're on vacation a thousand miles away?

A good knife.
It is hands down your most important piece. If you can only have one thing with you, it has to be a good knife. |

The wearable stuff is coming a long way as well.
Anybody like any of the wearable survival tools? |

If I'm lost in the woods or stranded on a mountain somewhere (which is a far more likely scenario) then a knife wouldn't be nearly as high a priority. Give me a cell phone first, then some way of purifying water, then a means of making fire.

Baring the cell phone. A knife will help you to start a fire and get pure water in any situation. MF is right.

In a real survival situation if I could bring only one thing it would be someone who knows how to survive WAY better than I do!

My choice of having only one item would be a good Hatchet. It can be used in many ways.
I grew up on a rural farm and could probably make it a long time in the woods alone. Main first thing would be to find a source for water. You got to have water to make it. Tom

I have no delusions. I like to hunt and fish BUT in an actual "survival" situation I would have very little chance to survive for too long. I simply would not be able to stay hydrated, and get enough healthy calories to be able to do it without things like a bow and arrow and knives and such.

Honestly at my age now I wouldn’t last long either. But even at a younger age much would depend on how well I knew the area.
Normal woods or mountain areas would be best for me, I could survive there. Hot flat places or places covered in ice would be much harder. Tom
