I have a goldfish from mouth effect I would like to perform, however I plan to use a fake goldfish.
Does anyone have any food safe suggestions? There are plenty of fake goldfish from China, but I don't really want to have them in my mouth for a long period of time. After searching around, the best option I can find is making my own out of silicone, however that isn't the cheapest option (goldfish mold + silicone + pigments is probably around $100+ from my quick research). If anyone has any other suggestions, that would be excellent! |

That's a good idea. Ideally I would like something that doesn't need preparation ahead, but maybe I should start with carrot, and arrange the silicone fish later if the effect plays well enough.

From my understanding, Matt Schullien had a goldfish bowl at his establishment. He would reach in a take one out and eat it. It was shaved carrots thumb palmed in and wiggled about as he brought it to his mouth to eat. This was a story shared with me many years ago from a friend that had been to Schuilien’s. I’m not sure if it was true or if he was just feeding me a fish story (pun intended).

Yes, the Matt Schulien story is true. It is in his book, I believe.
--------------------------------------------------- Kune, please be advised that paint, pigments, silicone are all toxic to humans. You should not touch silicone without wearing gloves. They are worse then putting a China fish with lead contained in it, in your mouth. Human's can only put food in their mouths to nourish the body. Please stay safe and alive. |

I have been looking into the possibility of making one out of gelatin and glycerine, which should be very food safe, but I think eventually starts to go moldy. Not nearly as good as silicone, but a great deal cheaper.

You’ll spend time, money, and effort on buying supplies, crafting a mild, and making a silicone goldfish. But don’t want to be bothered by prepared a slice of carrot ahead of time?

Swedish (gummy) Fish come in an assortment of colors and are perfectly safe and edible. https://www.amazon.com/Swedish-Fish-Chew......1LF7515A Eat the ones whose colors you don't want ... or save them to perform an additional trick of a color changing fish.

Silicone itself is not toxic. It's silica.. the same thing sand is. Now the catalyst could be considered "not good for you", but even then it's not toxic. You don't want to get the catalyst on your skin though, because it will dry it out.
If you were going to make a silicone fish, use Dragon Skin. http://www.reynoldsam.com/product/dragon-skin/ A quote from it's SDS (safety data sheet)... "No ingredients are hazardous according to Regulation 2012 OSHA Hazard Communication Standard 29 CFR 1910.1200 criteria." Randi |

Check out https://www.smooth-on.com/
they make a full line of products many are food safe as per label and safety sheets. Just do your reading, and the best way in my opinion is to get one of the ones from china, then make a food safe mold of it and you can cast as many as you'd like in food safe silicone. All the techniques and materials on on their website. I've taken many classes at their PA location on mold making and casting. Lets face it, you're going to need more than one....they won't last forever. I've used their materials to make vanishing bottles, foam and rubber props, etc. Yes it can get pricey but they sell almost every material in starter kit size. check it out Bruce |

Smooth-On and Reynold's Advanced Materials, are the same company. Smooth-On started off making an epoxy paste, and Reynold was a man in Dallas Texas selling the epoxy paste out of the trunk of his car. Both companies continued to grow, and when Mr. Reynold decided to retire, he sold the company to Smooth-On. Now, every store that makes a profit by selling Smooth-On products, gets bought up and turned into a Reynold's Advanced Material store.
If you order online, no matter if you order from http://www.smooth-on.com, or you order from http://www.reynoldsam.com, your order will be directed to the nearest Reynolds store to you. Randi |

Swedish Fish is a nice idea!
Thank you very much Randi and drmolarmagic for all the information and links. Unfortunately, as I am located in Australia I think the shipping may come to quite a bit, but if so, hopefully I can find an equivalent available here. |

Another thought... what about some goldfish colored fabric cut into the shape of a gold fish?
