I really do not understand why these threads get so disrupted with back and forth disparaging remarks. It is very unkind and unprofessional.
Regarding the mailing list/contest; All you would need to do is say "sign up for my mailing list and have a chance to win ....." Nothing deceptive, nothing shifty. Some may signup just for the chance to win (who hasn't done this?) and some may want to get notified of upcoming performances. You can also let them know that you only mail out something once a month or whatever and you won't sell their names to other companies. I like to be reminded of things I am interested in every month or so and it's easy to delete. I doubt the OP is going to be bombarding potential customers with mass mailings anyways. |

Whew! Over! Done! I did it. I completed the marathon. A week in the sweltering heat, performing to the sound of crowing roosters, for anything that walks.
Went over fabulous! I was definitely the busiest booth in the building!

It was a blast. But I was like a duck. Calm on the outside, but paddling like crazy underneath.
I learned a TON, about what works and what doesn't work in this venue. Took extensive notes. Next year, I'll be ten times better. Guaranteed. Reset time is crucial in these booth situations. The more minimal, the better. Reason being that as soon as one group moves away, the next one is right on their tail. And as far as effects that use pockets, well, you have to limit it to one or two at the most. Goshman sponge effects were King. "and then there were four" and "color changing sponge ball to cube", were perfect. Worked great for the kids, and even the moms got involved for the kicker ending. Did that one a million times! Rope effects were practical. Lots of rope effects require little reset. C&R, Profs. Nightmare (Sankey magic wand version) linking ropes..all were fine. Card and packet effects? Yup. Aldo Columbini's "Have A Nice Day" got 'em every time, and requires only a second for reset. Souvenirs and stickers for the kids were the order of the day. Rick Lax''s new "Diamonds Are Forever", Paul Harris's "Twilight Angels", and Richard Sanders "Stickman Four" left 'em with something to take home. Coin effects? Coins across with 8 Eisenhaur dollars and no gimmicks went on all night. Zero reset. Big coins for eye appeal. I did several others. But these were some of my mainstays. I learned ALOT! I swear I ran into every personality type of kid there is. The "I know how that trick is done" (before you even remove the cards from the case!) The "Oh, you just did "so and so." (The kid who refuses to be amazed or experience any sense of wonder.) and so with every phase or move of the trick, they are announcing to the crowd how smart they are by "telling how it's done", although they are sadly incorrect. The little ones with big, beautiful eyes that express wide eyed wonder and melt your heart. The teenagers with their friend in a group who can't allow themselves to be fooled because it bruises their fragile, ego in front of their peers. The really nice kid with a sweet nature who TRULY loves to watch magic and keeps coming back for more and more repeat performances, because in his heart he wants to learn and be like me, someday. The young couples who are dating (boy and girl) And every stop In between, but of course, I predicted this before the show in my initial post, I think. So I got toughened a bit. Or "seasoned" may be a better word. To say the least, I put myself through the white hot heat of the fire, and passed. So I'll peruse my extensive notes that I took, and enitiate my ideas for improvement and next year, I'll be ten times better.

Did you run into any decision makers? After all they are the ultimate goal.
Performance for the kids is great, and it certainly is necessary to showcase the ability. But ultimately it is decision makers who write the checks.

I ran into several who definitely wanted my card and or more information, unprompted.

Some of them I did, but I was having to rush, because I had crowds of people standing in front of my table, waiting for the show.

That is always the rub. No money in crowds in front of the table if you can't convert them.

I understand what you are saying, but one of my goals was to just get my face out in front of the community. To not be an unknown in this county. Many of them said to me "I've never heard of you before."
Well now you have. In a fabulous and memorable way. I'll not be forgotten. They now know what makes me unique, and what sets me apart form the competition. I'm the one who has a way with kids. (to make them happy and laugh and smile) I'm the only one around in the big, colorful costume who is "The Cartoon Voiced Magic Man", who makes birthday parties "more fun than a barrel of bunny rabbits." (my USP.) They didn't know that before. Now it's stuck in their head. They will never forget me. I also was able to direct a lot of them to my FB page. So I did the best I could in the rush that was at my booth. Next year I will improve vastly by studying my mistakes or what I could have done better. For me, It was a hundred bucks well spent.

Were you able to actually book anything there onsite?

Doug, well done. Main thing is you did learn from your experience. I’ve worked many of the festivals outside and I know how exhausting a job it can be
Just curious, were you alone in the booth? Very hard to do a ‘show’ at this type event where you have kids running around and promote the business to adults at the same time. The idea situation is to do the show on a stage/platform set up for the entire event and have a separate booth to point to where you or your help will be giving out and gathering information. You really do need help with you. Another idea is get with the event planner before hand and swap an hour or so of strolling magic for your booth space fee. That way you can direct them to the booth where you and your helper will only be giving info and taking names. Just something to think about for next time. Tom

Doug,
Sounds like a great day and a good use of $100! If you only get two gigs out of the day, you will be ahead. For next year I might suggest, piggybacking on Mindpros comment, to offer a discount if they commit to a show on the spot. Say you charge $300 for a kids party, if they sign up and make a $100 deposit, you include party bags for free or perhaps $50 off. Give a reason to commit. Even if you leave the date open - mutually agreeable date within next 12 months. I've done too many of these kinds of events where no shows actually came from them, even though I thought the day went well. You will want to avoid that situations! Another thing you might do is sell magic tricks - simple ones like ball and vase, but I would rather push for the onsite commitment (deposit!) for a future show. Hudson |

And the first thing they heard when they walked up was "Hi, I'm daffy Doug! (Cartoon voiced magic man) and welcome to my "super crazy magic show" I make birthday parties more fun than a barrel of bunny rabbits!" So they got hit with my name and my USP as they were approaching and glancing at my booth, and as soon as they stopped. So if they don't know it, it's surely not because I didn't tell them. And next year, as I improve and or get better, I will become even MORE "Bill Malonish" in my pitch.

But yeah, I was alone in the booth, as my wife and I are separated, so I don't have a loving spouse to help me. I'm alone. So doing the magic for the kids (you can't avoid them, as the majority of adults who walk up have little ones.) ( Oh, look little Johnny! A magic show!"), and also trying to converse with the adults at the same time requires multi-tasking of the highest order. I would perform one or two effects for them, and they are like "Thank-you!" And starting to move on. I barely had time to hand them my card as they left, as there was already another crowd gathered wanting to watch me. There was precious little time for one on one. I'm only one guy. Yeah. I needed a helper. I really did. Performing AND promoting and gathering information is a two man job. Or one man and one woman, if one is fortunate enough to be married to a loving soul mate who supports your magic efforts. I only know I did my very best.

Which I planned to sell for a buck a piece, but I absolutely did not have the time!! (like I said, was totally wrapped in performing.) I had also thought about making up a small set of kids magic tricks, but wasn't sure what to put in it, how to package it, or what it should sell for. If you have ideas on that, I would truly appreciate it.
