Café Rustico II, where a bunch of magicians have been meeting up on Saturday afternoons for well over a decade (and before that, many years at the dearly-departed Reuben's), closed a few weeks ago to move to a new space a couple of blocks away. I tried to stop by today to hang out, and couldn't find them. The owner of the pizza place said they had moved to a Panera Bread on Fifth Avenue, but there was nobody there. Staff at Fantasma and Tannen's didn't know anything. Anybody have any clue where the meetup has moved to? It would be a shame if this decades-old group broke up.

I thought Tannen's stepped forward to host the meetings - I'd be in touch with Adam there.

I stopped by Tannen's and Fantasma, and nobody knew anything. Then I saw this:

The group is now meeting at 33 Gourmet Deli, 157 West 33rd Street, between 6th and 7th.. There is a staircase at the rear of the place that leads to an upstairs dining area where the magicians meet.

Herb, am I wrong to remember Tannen's sending out a note saying they'd be hosting?

The place was packed, not with the usual group of older guys, but with some much younger folks and shoppers. I also stopped by Fantasma, and the guy there said that some of the folks had just been through a bit earlier. I also dropped in at the new Rustico location, which is much nicer but too small to host the meetup, and the owner there directed me to a Panera Bread on Fifth Avenue, which has a large downstairs seating area, but there was nobody there either. And those that come, respect that 33 Gourmet is allowing their place to be used for the magicians to meet on Saturday. Do your part and make a food purchase downstairs before bringing it upstairs. We need to support them in return of their generosity.
