What is your favorite whiskey under $100 a bottle. For cheap American, I like the intense oak flavor of Knob Creek, but my real love is Islay Whiskies. I love peat. I am currently drinking a bottle of Ardbeg 10 year. I like anything from Bowmore, Laphroaig, or Ardbeg. What is your whiskey of choice?

It sounds more as if you're talking about whisky, not whiskey.
I like Bowmore, Bunnahabhain, Bruichladdich, Ardbeg (especially Uigeadail), Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Talisker, Macallan, Oban, Tormore (which I cannot find in the U.S. any longer), and Aberlour (especially A'bunadh). But there are a quite a number that I haven't yet tried. It's hard to choose a single favorite from those, but if I were forced to, I'd probably choose the Ardbeg; the finish is cinnamony. I haven't found anything from Glenfiddich that I like, nor from Caol Ila. |

When it comes to Bourbon, my five favorite whiskeys under 100$ are Four Roses Single Barrel, Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Baker's 7 year old, Blanton's Straight from the barrel and finally the king of bourbons for well under 100 bucks: Elijah Craig 12 years Barrel Proof.
I'm not so much into the peat monsters of Islay, but the ones I enjoyed most are: Laphroaig Quarter Cask (these days much better than the standard 10 year old), Ardbeg Uigeadail, Ardbeg Corryvreckan, Kilchoman Sanaig (a young peated scotch matured in sherry casks) and my favorite of the Islay whiskies: Bunnahabhain 12 years old. The Bunna 12 however is not a peated whisky, but one of the best 12 year olds you can buy. Another really great and heavily peated whisky would be Ledaig 10 years old from the isle of Mull. This one gives many standard Islay whiskies a run for their money. |

My go to is Laphroaig, though I've yet to meet an Islay I haven't liked. Would be interested to try Ledaig.

You guys are making this recovered alcoholic a little thirsty! Scotch was my drink of choice too. Any brand, but don't use one of those computerized shot dispensers please! Free pour or nothing! And I expected you to be very free with your pouring!

Greetings Tim;
When I'm relaxing after working in the workshop, I usually pour a glass of Connemara Peated Single Malt Irish Whiskey. I initially tried it in Ireland a couple years back, and had a hell of a time finding it here in the U.S. I resolved to just buy it by the case since finding a supplier. Now that I have all these empty bottles, I'm turning them into sets of lamps for the Kids and family members who are Irish. Since you like Peated, give this one a try. All the Best Marty |

It would be challenging not to overdo it, even if each sample was just a swallow. Quote:

I just recently tried Bunnahabhain (Toiteach) and Bowmore (15-year, darkest) for the first time.
I'm likin' 'em. |

Tim, since you like Islay malts, you should be aware, that the Connemara is a very light dram in comparison. Although it's a nice whiskey, there's not much going on in terms of smell and taste. At 40% ABV it's also a little watery.

Anyone else like Rye?

Hmmm I guess not. Is it not common in the U.S.?
Tonight I had a few ounces of 12 year old Bowmore. Wow. It was very interesting. I quite enjoyed it. |

I did like the Rittenhouse, which reminded me of some German herbal liqueurs. I still have half a bottle of Knob Creek Rye, which is also quite nice, especially the distinct bread dough aroma and flavour. Masterson’s 10 yr. Straight Rye was good too, surprisingly smooth, but way too expensive for what it has to offer (only had a sample of this one). The one I didn't like was the 1776 rye (again only a sample). Pikesville Rye and Lot 40 from Canada are the next ones on my list. |

The closest I get to "hard liquor" would be the odd "Rum and Coke." I've never had whisky and have no desire to.
I would like to get your opinions on something though. In his Callahan's books. Spider Robinson has his character, Jake Stonebender, favor Irish Coffee with Bushmills in it. So the question is, what's your opinion of Bushmills?
