Hi. I am working on Dai Vernons Cups & Balls routine, that I think is great. There is one thing I don’t think I will do even though I see the great misdirection, but I feel a kind of revealing too much here. I suppose many of you know this routine, and what he says in the loading sequence:
«Now you see this ball has returned. The reason for that is very simple, I swindle you see. I pretend to take it in this hand, that’s called misdirection. I only pretend to put it in my pocket, but I bring it down on my little finger with the pinkie and drop it inside the cup. But it’s not really there at all, it’s behind the cup. But if I actually put it in my pocket, how many under the cup», etc. I have all c&b dvd’s from Daryl and Michael Ammar, and in their Vernon routines they also use his method, but just with some other comments. I’m not quite sure, but I think it’s one of them that also mention that some people feel they reveal too much here. So my questions to you are: Have any of you been thinking of this the way I do? Do you know a way to do this a little different , or with maybe other words? I have not found a good method yet... Regards Per K. |

It's not really revealing anything, it's what they think you are doing anyway, so it becomes a sucker effect. You show it to them, they now think they know the secret and then you fool them. You don't have to do it if you don't want to, its just another bit of business that usually gets a laugh.

When magicians begin to seriously practice Vernon's routine, the false explanation sequence quickly gets the heave-ho.

IMHO the key is to not do any real sleight of hand here. Make the worst possible false transfer and clumsy palm. Don't do a real French drop or worse a real ball or retention vanish.
There are many other options to nod to the "fake Explanation" and they are in the market and literature. I think you will find them a better alternative, anyway. |
