Hi, having invested both in the book and DVD (Paul Wilson) for the Royal Road I am keen to understand how others have approached learning from these sources. I must admit to be overwhelmed, I spend time practicing the basics and although I have moved onto a number of routines I just feel overwhelmed.
Having looked across a number for forums Royal Road always comes out on top as the go to for both newbies and experiences magicians but what are peoples thoughts on this Vs card college? Any advice would be greatly welcome. |

Hi Daniel. I did, and still do get overwhelmed by the amount of material to digest. One thing I always have to remember is that this journey takes a considerable amount of time. For personal reasons, my hours have been limited, so it took me about one year to get through Royal Road and the companion DVDs. In retrospect they taught me so much. However, the RR level of learning let me know that there is a long journey ahead. The RR book/DVDs are a great introduction to card magic, but it takes time, a long time. As they say, you cannot run until you can walk. These manipulations are not easy or intuitive physical movements and to do them smoothly and naturally takes a lot of time. I proceeded the obvious way - I read a chapter and then reviewed that chapter's material in the DVD. This works well...just as it should. R. Paul Wilson is a good instructor although I thought his "assistants" were a bit of pain. At the end I just felt that I had not learned enough to throw myself into more challenging sleight of hand with cards.
If you feel overwhelmed with the Royal Road it is possible that these feelings would intensify by tackling Card College, which I currently am doing. Personally, I still need the direction or a "course of study" to guide me in an ordered fashion since, for some reason, this helps quell the feeling of being overwhelmed. It is more intense than the RR, but the actual course-like nature of its style helps me as a student control the overwhelmed feelings...I'm not sure why. If you could control your anxiety/overwhelmed feelings by remembering that it takes time to even become decent, Card College is truly excellent. There is also a 4-DVD course that focuses on CC vols. 1 and 2, but currently it seems hard to find with commercial vendors-maybe eBay. The DVDs are excellent, but they don't provide the nurturing (for want of a better word) feel of R. Paul Wilson's approach-they are more intensely packed with information and the flow is more rapid. I get overwhelmed sometimes when I watch them. As an alternative, after you finish the RR, you may consider books by Harry Lorayne, such as THE MAGIC BOOK, and CLOSE-UP CARD MAGIC. The latter has a great version of the Ambitious Card which will teach you a great deal while learning it. Although I did not intensely study these books I found them instructive and very interesting. There is ample quality material for those just beginning their journey into card magic. I put them aside because I chose to methodically enhance my sleight capability by working through the Card College series. I'm curious how far I will get-I am currently in the middle of vol. 2. Anyway, I share your anxiety but if you take your time you will learn a great deal and enjoy the journey more.
So many sleights...so little time.

If you are interested in the Card College 1&2 videos, I believe they are available on Roberto Giobbi's website for 5 dollars per video or 50 dollars for the whole set. I'm actually considering getting it as well.

Just to get this complete:
A short time after I posted the link to Anrew's PDF. He informed us that he updated this idea. I just want to make sure, that people who might search for a similar topic and find this very one, won't be missing out on this. These two threads might become separated in the future so please check this also: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=41 |
