Hi everyone,
My name is Victor, I'm 18 years old and I'm fairly new to magic, but I'm looking to learn a lot of things from Magic Café and this amazing community. Right now I know the basics for doing card magic, and I will give my best to be as good magician as I can be. And English is not my mother tongue; so please excuse any errors on my part. Thanks for reading. |

Welcome VictorP,
Your English seems fine. Cards are great, so much you can do with them and so portable. You'll never regret the time you spend practicing. May you always make a strong and positive connection with your Audiences. -Mary Mowder |

Welcome VictorP. I can guarantee that your English is better than my Spanish.
Glad to have you here and looking forward what you have to contribute. I found books to be my first and foremost source for learning, as they do not influence your performance style as much as videos do. I see too many young performers mimicking their favorite magicians and not developing their own styles. How many bad David Blaine imitators have we seen? "Too many," is the answer. Technique is important, but presentation is even more important, as I've been blown away by some self-working effects, but also bored silly by some complicated sleight of hand routines that were presented with virtually no passion. That's just hand gymnastics, not magic.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Card magic is a good start. There are many amazing tricks you can perform with special decks, but if you can master several with a regular deck, you'll have the ability to use anyone's deck and perform in any setting.
You can also learn some flourishes, like Lennart Green's Top Shot, to further captivate your audience. Some people also like to do cardistry. There are many sources for these on YouTube - TheRussianGenius, 52Kards, Peter Pellikaan, Mismag822 - to name a few. |

Saludos amigo Victor!
There! I've just used up my entire Spanish vocabulary! So, I will finish my post in English! (heehee!) Mary and, the Wiz have offered you some excellent advice. --And, I agree with them completely. So! I will add just a few thoughts to their counsel. While you are practicing the "hand skills", it will be most helpful, if you also study, not just read, books like Dariel Fitzkee's "Showmanship For Magicians", and/or Kenneth Weber's "Making Magic Entertaining". There are other equally well written books that discuss showmanship. Others will most likely suggest more than one! Right now, you are learning magic with cards. Cards are, generally, close up props. New, young magicians, have a tendency to think of "showmanship" and "presentation' as it relates to stage and platform performances. Don't fall into that "trap". Close up performances require showmanship and presentation also. "Magic" is 5% sleight of hand skills, 5% perceptual illusion, 5% esoteric principles of science, and 85% PSYCHOLOGY!!! (i exaggerate just a little!) When you wish to "add a trick" to your repertoire, three "things" are necessary! 1. Learn how it's DONE! 2, Learn how to DO it! 3, Learn how to DO it, so that it ENTERTAINS people!!!!! You must understand that, MAGIC IS NOT INHERENTLY E N T E R T A I N G !!! The magician's "task" is to make the trick entertaining, with his SHOWMANSHIP & PRESENTATION! My mentors, when I was your age (I'm 86, now.) said "it" very simply, and, very "colorfully": "It's not WHAT you do, it's HOW you do it!"
