I am at an impasse. Is there video help for the Illogical DL? Funny how when I was young, all the instructions were on badly typed zerox or printed copies like they were from 1920. You would buy an effect for $20 and it was just a pamphlet or a folded up piece of paper. And the books were great but still had the pen outline drawings. Since VHS and DVD, I have found it difficult to go back and read the written descriptions and follow them. Anyone else struggle with printed materials?

Honestly, I struggle with video instructions. I learn much easier from written descriptions.

Spread control from Harry Lorayne. I’ve read it from several Harry’s book, and I’m still confused by its deceptiveness. I really don’t see how it can convince anybody that the cards are lost IN the deck. It’s obvious that if they are laid down ON the deck, when you gather it, you see and understand that those cards are going to stay ON the deck. But I’m willing to change my mind if someone shows it to me in a convincing way. Any video ?
As for dvd or books, everything has been already said elsewhere. My preference goes by far to the books. |

Gotta agree with the spread cull. You can use it to set up cards, control them, force 'em, and just generally toss them all over the place wherever you may need.
We should all be in a constant state of wonder

Even with cards without white boarder, it is plainly obvious to me. I really would like to hear reactions from spectators.

https://youtu.be/UWvRorX0KhQ Terrible example. Ricky started out with smooth, unstudied but elegant table shuffles. Then he goes into the contrived, controlled control. Then he follows that up with a cut that looks like he's about to use his arms to take flight. Then he turns to the side and concludes with a deliberate, studied shuffle. A study in poor contrasts. |

It is a wonderful example. Ricky Jay was one of the best sleight of hand card men who ever lived. But I suppose you know better than he.
I bow to your superior knowledge. |

You know what else is plainly obvious to me? Every Doubl Lift, every top change, every zarrow, every shift, every palm, every force, every control. But what is plainly obvious to me is irrelevant. Magic exists in performance. The magician entertains with a pack of cards and the audience responds positively if they enjoy it. Magic does not exist in teenagers in hoodies riding trains showing people the same trick 25 times with a different control each time and forcing them to analyze which one is most fair. That is NOT "hearing" from spectators. "Hearing" from spectators is listening to their praise of the performance artist. Ricky Jay placed some cards on a spread, gathered them up, and shuffled them. that's IT.! It doesn't matter one iota what happens to the cards during the pick up of the spread because a) they're shuffled and b) nobody cares! They have invested their time in watching an artist perform some magic. And not just any artist, but one of the greatest of our time. Why did he use it? Do you really think Ricky Jay wasn't capable of any of the most knuckle busting shifts or controls ever invented? Of course he was. Heres why he used it. Becsuse it is perfect for this application. The EFFECT is the production of the 5 spade cards yes, but the TRUE effect here is the production of all 13 spade cards and then the revelation of the entire deck in order. To spend time trying to prove to an audience that each of the first five cards is hopelessly lost by using some other procedure would absolutely destroy this masterpiece. The Spread Control followed by a shuffle has merits recognized by many of the greats. Do you think maybe they might know what they are doing? Nah you're right. Standing ovations and the adulation of peers all over the world is meaningless. I demand real data. |

I have to admit, even when you're failing to make a point, magicfish, you swing for the fences. Never change.

One of my clichés comes to mind: I soooo wish that those who don't know what the heck they're talking about would stop "talking about"! Mr. Rachmaninov and Mr. Pupkin - if you aren't fooling all with my SPREAD CONTOL - YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!! (Why do I have the feeling they don't "do" it at all - they just want to "talk about.") I really am pretty much (very) aware of that kind of "talk about" from these two gentlemen - nothing new.
Now, if you want to hear "talk about" from the creator - ME - who has been fooling people all over the world with the SPREAD CONTROL, including quite a few magicians because they haven't read the good stuff - pay attention... I teach/use my SPREAD CONTROL (which I am extremely proud of) for only three selected cards - not the five that Ricky used. And I do teach a way to take attention away from the fact that they are not being re-inserted into the spread, not that that's that important. Now, I've taught my SPREAD CONTROL in a few of my books, including SPECIAL EFFECTS and there's an entire section devoted to it in JAW DROPPERS ONE (sorry, sold out) - nine miracle-type effects (obviously not in the opinions of Rachmaninov and Pupkin - because they don't know them, have no idea of them - but they will "talk about."). Also in JAW DROPPERS TWO and of course in AND FINALLY! - along with a few of my other utility items like, Bottom Stet Overhand Control, Angle Spread, Utility Mixer (Invaluable), Reverse Faro Ending, HaLo Thumb Push-Up, Status Quo Shuffle, Universal Reversal, The Lorayne Force, The Lorayne Spin, Illogical Double Lift - and about SEVENTY effects/routines - that I use all he time...to "kill" with!! (You really do have to start reading the good stuff, guys!) Okay; I've "talked about" enough - and many thanks to the two fonts of knowledge above for the plug opportunity!!!

They also have to start reading the good stuff!! Maybe then they'll know what they're talking about. Rachmaninov mentions "several of my books." Find that hard to believe - he sure as heck hasn't ordered any of my last - best - books...I know that because they were/are available ONLY through me personally. So, wonder which "several books."
So, Rachmaninov start reading the good stuff - you'll find lots of easy, self working, tricks - many even work with or without white borders!!!!

For pure versatility the pinky break is my favorite.
Here is a 29-minute live performance of mine: https://youtu.be/lq2Rj1uf05M I used to be quite sensitive to criticism; I am much less so now; so, please do criticize my technique, presentation, and posts. It helps me to grow, and I promise to take responsibility and not to be defensive. |
