The ring on rope is a wonderful trick and very entertaining when it's well done. In my opinion using your fingers like a scissors to cut the rope gives the secret away.
It shows that the rope was not a solid piece at all. I remembered a lady sitting next to me at a magic performance and after seeing the magician pretend to cut the rope with his fingers said " I know how he put the ring on the rope, there is a cut in the rope" Tricky Ricky |

Agreed. In contrast, using a knife instead of scissors can enhance the magical thrill and attention.

Somebody might want to inform David Williamson that he is exposing the method...he pretends to cut the rope using imaginary scissors during his routine.
However, it might be safe to assume that he is entertaining his audience to the level where they could give a hoot about method as they are having such a great time! |

Tricky Ricky ...
an interesting statement. Unfortunately, perhaps a "sign of the times". In a pre-day music hall - in front of a more naive magic audience - this might have been received with wonder and amazement. However, in this day and age - with internet and disclosure, I suggest that some of the "wonder and innocence" of magic may have been lost. To the spectator I would suggest ... just enjoy the visual performance |
