So I have seen this trick over two dozen times now.
Magician comes up to the table - holds his hand out with a closed fist. He is right handed and it is stretched out straight in front of him. His left hand is always inside his left suit pocket. He asks one of the members of the table to name any card. After they named their card, he turns his wrist and brings his closed fist towards him while keeping the rest of his hand straight. He then opens his fingers straight, all closed together. When they are opened, they are pointing to his left from his perspective. When his fingers are opened, a folded paper falls down. When it's unfolded, it's the card they named out. Prop: It's built into his suit. There is some kind of indexing system inside the left pocket. I'm imagining some kind of springy string or mechanism that is running across from inside the left hand pocket and that extends all the way to the very end of the right hand. Let's say all 52 indexed folded papers with pre-written names are kept in place through this spring string. Using the left hand, you lift or release one of the papers, they fly out through the long sleeve right hand and hits the open fingers and falls down. I think timing is everything. Makes it look like it came out of his hands. It's coming from the sleeve. I have noticed his left hand only comes out once the paper is dropped. He must have built it himself. I want someone to build it for me. Budget is not a problem. |

Hi Prankmonster,
Sounds like a great trick but you have a few problems with your request. To start with we don't talk about methods here so nobody is going to tell you how its done in the workshop. There are areas where secrets are discussed but you will need 50 post to get in. Even then its not a place where you just go in and ask" how do they do that" The second problem is that whoever invented this effect has rights that are recognized and respected here. No one should copy someones original creation. I have not seen the effect as I don't do cards. Its likely someone knows the name of the effect. If you can find a name you may be able to buy the effect on the market. Sometime creators don't sell an effect they create but keep it to themselves. Best of luck with your magic journey Gimpy

If price is no object and you have seen this performer do it that many times, consider offering him money for the secret. If he developed this special suit for the trick, it may be his invention. If so, he deserves to benefit from it.

If anyone knows the name of the effect, kindly let me know so I can see if it's available on the market! @Patrick - I did try that. He is an interesting fellow. This is the only trick he does. He says there is no trick involved and told me to believe more in magic |

The basic plot is a fairly common one in magic. There are several methods to do it. Note, that by basic plot, I don't mean left hand in suit pocket, right hand does something sneaky, there's the paper with the card on it. I mean the written prediction of the chosen card. You can look at Anneman's Practical Mental Magic and get one way to do it. However, with a little creativity, there are several methods in that tome that can be adapted to this same trick.
Try this idea: you approach the table. Place one card face down on the table. You have your participant imagine holding a deck of cards and throwing away half of them, then half the remaining, then narrowing it down to just one card left. Remember, he makes the choices, starting with the whole imaginary deck. Have him turn over the card that's been on the table the whole time. It is the card he named. This is available from Bryn Reynolds, who can be found here on the Café. Step one of Corrinda would also make this effect possible with you openly holding a business card, no sleeves needed. You ask for a card, they name it, you give them the business card and it has their card written on it. As an added bonus, you could ask them to name a number or word or person's name instead. In all magic, there's some compromise. Nothing comes without effort, nothing comes without practice, but the sources I've suggested above will not be any more work to learn to use than the special suit you suggest. And probably a whole lot cheaper. -Patrick |

And that is why the Café community is so very valuable...

And also... consider that he might just be cheating.
The plot carried to its most absurd can be found in Patrick Kuff's Penguin Lecture... complete with "indexed" jacket.
