So by the time the cigarette is through, and you've shown it both sides, and switched out the gimmicked coin, you're away and over the state line. By contrast, muggles have all seen (or at least will be aware of) a retractable dagger. even if they haven't, they will be drawn to the right conclusion when they see the Chapstick penetrating because that's what it looks like: you are actually seeing the gimmick in use. Now, this is fine in some tricks, but in this case I believe is detrimental to the illusion. But - go for it guys! Most of you probs perform far more than I do, so knock yourselves out if you reckon it fits you. |

I totally agree. When I first talked about the "obvious" method at the beginning of this thread, I was exactly thinking to these retractable daggers that everyone should have played with while younger.
To me, it was so obvious than it takes me less than 1 second to understand what's going on (at least for 50% of the trick - the 50% remaining part is the same secret than the one used for many similar penetration effect, so it was also natural to me to understand what's going on - but I could understand that the layman won't understand that part). As others already said, the progressive nature of the "melting" process is precisely what - I think - is ruining the secret (at least 50% of it, for the laymen). So for me it's a big no, and at such a price, it is without any regrets |

A retractable dagger perhaps. But a retractable chapstick? I’m not sure they’ll come to the same conclusion.

Then I saw all these comments : brilliant, unbelievable, outstanding. So I'm sure it's all about perception, but in france we used to say "if it's swimming like a duck, if it's flying like a duck, if it's quacking like a duck, and if it looks like a duck, well, it's probably a duck" The melting part is so impossible that, to me, it sounded exactly like what it is really : a retractable thing. Maybe the m****t on the other side of the bill will be enough to "lost" them somehow. |

Chapstick (What this effect uses) is a moisturizer and "healing" for lips that are dry, chapped. Like me and many others have said. This is and has been very normal and not at all un-common or weird for men, boys, girls, women, anyone... carry and use every day for some. Especially in the winter. They're readily available at gas stations, grocery stores, convenience stores, Target, WalMart... everywhere. Not all are the "Chapstick" brand. I actually have in my car one that is called Carmex. I even have extras that I offer to riders (Men included) when I am driving for Uber and Lyft part time. Again, Not trying to start any issues here. But I am truly baffled and curious why this is strange to some of you in Europe. I just don't get it... It's a Magical Mystery in itself!!! LMAO!!! Mike |

Agree Mike. This is a very common item in the US. It would not be strange at all pulling out a tube of chapstick. Not in the least bit. Bummer for those on the other side of the pond. I can't wait to receive this!!

Chapstick or just about any "tubed" lip balm or lipstick I have seen is made to be retractable. There is a twist dial on the bottom to raise and lower the product to extend and retract for use. Maybe the method of retraction is different but "some type" of retraction could easily cross someones mind, although they may dismiss it later because it was the outside, not the inside that penetrated.
If I use the non magician side of my brain and break down this effect (or any "X" thru bill), I go directly to the props used. A bill, a Chapstick (or pen, key or Sharpie) I could quickly dismiss the bill as it was handed straight to me for exam. Then I must look back in my mind to the other item (even if a cleverly switched one was examined by me) Chapstick, an item you uncap, extend, paste on your lips, retract, recap. Now, extend and retract are at play in my mind. A pen however, if I do the same, I use a pen to write and often to pierce an item in order to open it. Key, unlock / start car, pierce objects I need to open. Sharpie, write and recap. This is why this particular item as well as the few Sharpies thru anything out there don't catch my eye as something I would use. My "Laser Pen" and "Ignition" still work well for me and make sense where I don't think a Sharpie or a Chapstick tube does. YMMV.

Not sure exactly how Smooth works but I presume you have to switch the entire chapstick. So there is some built-in misdirection while they take the bill but the chapstick I presume does go entirely out of sight however briefly.
This may be the big difference between this and something like a pen or key (besides being different effects, I get that) but with those you just steal away a portion and the item never really goes out of sight. That may give those items a big advantage. However, having said that, I did pre-order Smooth and although I am aware that it's common for manufacturers/creators to market rubbish, I'm giving Smooth the benefit of the doubt for a couple reasons. I like much but not all of Nicholas Lawrence's creations. I'm hoping he really did work on it for year which must have involved some actual performances that went over well. It sold out quick at Magic Live and the few who bought it or saw it that I've heard about seem to have good things to say about it. So fingers crossed that it lives up to the hype. If I don't care for it it goes right back to Penguin and all I'm out is a couple bucks for return shipping so not a big risk IMO. |

Another great visual effect from Mr Lawrence. Nick assured me that 'The gimmick is examinable! The Chapstick that goes through is the Chapstick they examine' Pre-ordered!

Thought for sure I had to have an extra tube of chapstick on me. Happy to hear that is not the case. |

I think quite a few of us got it wrong but in this case I'm happy to be wrong.
Although in my defense I did say PRESUME, but only because I was just repeating what pegasus had told me. |

Oh man, the same tube of chapstick used is the one that can be examined! That is super awesome. Definitely looking forward to receiving this soon.

Got my preorder in.
In defense of the effect itself, not that anybody cares what I think, this just looks really cool, regardless of what the spectator suspects. I mean no adult I know believes in Santa Claus or real magic. Everybody knows there is a "trick" behind what you did, so naturally, they suspect the objects you're holding. The heat on the chapstick is no big deal and the same applies for any pen through dollar. |

I’m surprised at the negativity here as I think it looks incredible. I haven’t bought anything in well over a year and I probably won’t buy this either, but at least it feels fresh. I can’t remember the last release that made me even contemplate hitting the buy button and this at least did that.
As a side, it’s interesting that men apparently don’t carry chapstick in the UK because the weather is pretty ****ty there and I’d think it would be commonplace. It’s extremely common in the US, even where the weather is pretty much perfect all year long like on the west coast. |

A duck goes into the pharmacy.
"Can I have a Chapstick, please?" "Sure. That'll be $2.50." "Just put it on my bill." Badum tsss, I thank you. I'm here all week. |
