I like coin (chip) mentalism effects so this sound interesting, but there is no info about what are the included effects.
Any review on this? http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S25800

Interested. A 90 page pdf scares me a little.

Would like to know more about the specific routines that you can do with the coins

Agree with Psy.
There's nothing in the product description describing any of the 18 effects. The coins look good, but you can find any number of attractive coins that are actually "real." Oscar |

Are both sides of the coin identical or are they deliberately only showing one side?

Unfortunately we have only questions and looks like nobody have this coin yet to make a better review...

I'm also intrigued, but hesitant based on the lack of information in the ad. Based on the design of the coin, it looks like an effect similar to/based on the clock prediction may be part of the package. Not a big fan of procedural effects, though, so I'm going to hang out a bit and see if someone takes the plunge for us.

Terrible description. Would be nice if at least one possible effect was described, even vaguely! No idea at all what this is or can do.

I took the plunge. I’ll post thoughts when it arrives
And I think they are showing both sides, since there seem to be two designs with slight differences, one with a circle in the center, and the other a square, with different Roman numerals on each. This looks nothing like any ancient Roman coin I’ve ever seen, either in design or texture... but I’m intrigued by the premise, and the Unknown Mentalist, whoever she may be, has put out some truly incredible stuff. The Penguin site now has a few hints at what the effects will be that can be done with this coin.

Okay, so...I have to say I really like this! BUT--some folks probably won't. Here's the skinny:
The included PDF is a slightly revised collection of three of his earlier ebooks--InspyRing, ConspyRing, and 1089:Refreshed and Reloaded--with the prop changed from a ring (that previously needed to have some DIY work or professional engraving done to it) to this coin, which now has all the work already integrated into the coin. The first two books focus on a single numerical principle around the number 142857, which is the number inscribed in Roman numerals around one side of the coin. I have to say, this is one of the most incredible number principles I've personally ever heard of, and will take a few extra readings just to fully appreciate. Just one VERY basic routine sample: ask several spectators to write down any six-digit number (dates, PIN codes, whatever) on slips of paper. One slip is freely chosen, and a spec is asked to roll a die (or just imagine rolling a die) and to multiply the number on the paper by whatever number came up on the die, no force. The resultant number will be the exact number engraved on the coin (and this number will NOT be the same each time you perform it, but will still be on the coin due to it being cyclical). This principle is something I will absolutely be using. The third book is about the 1089 force that we all know about, but this takes it into some very cool and creative areas that haven't yet been explored. The other side of the coin has the number MLXXXIX around the rim, which is Roman numeral for 1089, used in some pretty wonderful applications and reveals. Example: you want to divine the spec's year of birth or PIN code. You hand her the coin, have her choose ANY three random digits from her phone number or date of birth or anything else, have her go through a brief process for the standard force, then have her look at the coin. She can google what the numerals mean (1089) and then have her subtract that from her total--it will be her year of birth, or phone unlock code, or whatever you want. It is absolutely confounding!! A few of the included effects in this kit aren't to my taste, but overall I think this is a powerhouse collection of micro effects that can leave people absolutely astounded, because these all seem like ridiculously impossible odds. The effects use dates, location coordinates, cards, written numbers, watches, dice, pictures, words, and probably other things I can't remember. Some effects make use of images that are included to print out, others are impromptu. One important note is that virtually none of the effects actually require the coin; you could do most or all of them without it, but the coin has been manufactured to add to the impact of them by giving you a great reveal, or allowing you to use numbers from it as a jumping off point for a routine, etc. The coin can be a focal point of an effect, or just tangential to it. It can certainly be used as a fascinating prop for a bizarre magicians (an old haunted coin, for example) or just an odd thing that you found with fascinating properties of synchronicity. The coin has a few other symbols on it that are different on each side, and the author also gives a few other things you can do with it, like brief readings, shape forces, Yes/No or Truth/Lie stuff, etc. I've mentioned in a prior post that this coin looks absolutely nothing like an ancient Roman coin. Calling it one just because it has some Roman numerals on it would be absurd. You get a small piece of cardboard with the pictures from the Penguin ad on it, and it is supposed to help add authenticity by suggesting you bought this from a coin dealer. Again, this is nonsense, and I would just toss the little card--it serves no other purpose. I think this is a terrific little prop and an excellent collection of mathematical miracles. Two thumbs up from me, but if you don't like a bit of simple math in your routines, or if you wanted the coin to be gimmicked in some amazing way, you might want to give it a pass. Thanks! Seth |
