Hey guys, what IS up, it's your boy the Burnaby Kid here and today's topic is your favourite effects by Ed Marlo. Without further ado, let's dive in!

So... which Dai Vernon effects do you like? It took me a while but after the venerable Whit Haydn pointed out Vernon's approach to the bent corner in three card monte, I applied it to my work, and boy, does it ever kill if you find yourself with a tough audience.

Well, the topic is "Your favourite effects by Ed Marlo!!!"

I decided that I wanted to open discussion by praising Dai Vernon's approach to the bent corner with Three Card Monte.

The marlo miracle. I am trying to tweak it to make a little more of it.

I’m definitely a ”Team Marlo” guy when it comes to my influences. I have most of Marlo’s works and a lot that trickled down thru greats like Bannon, Malone, Solomon, Aronson and too many others from the ”Chicago Scene” who mostly credit Marlo to list them all. I don't know if I have a proper ”Favorite” routine or move but I do know I reach for his books more than any others.

Which is precisely why I'm confused. You stated that you wanted to start a thread about Ed Marlo effects and then asked :
"So... which Dai Vernon effects do you like?"

We could do both I guess.
I like many from both men.
For Marlo I've always loved Mental Topper.

Too many Marlo favorites to list, so here are three that appeal to me:
Marlo's Bluff Ace Assembly, can't remember the original source (I'm sure someone will point it out), but I found it on the Malone/Marlo DVD's and Paul Lelekis "Ace Assemblies & Four Ace Tricks" from Lybrary.com
Marlo's Favorite Ace Assembly, same citations as above.
Blind Mentalism, Marlo With Out Tears page 154. This is extremely devious!

I believe Marlo's Bluff Ace Assembly first appeared in "Kid Stuff Five," put out by Magic Inc. and currently out of print.

I'll second the Matching Routine.

After a little research I found that, according to Paul Lelekis in "Ace Assemblies & Four Ace Tricks", the Bluff assembly first appeared in the Ireland Yearbook in 1955 and Favorite Ace Assembly came from Marlo's 1945 booklet "Off the Top".

The Bluff Ace Assembly is the first effect on the Bill Malone / Marlo videos. I was just (re)watching it. Personally (and humbly) I believe it still needs work to be done - it’s not convincing enough. After you make the first ace vanish, any clever spectator would like to see if the other aces are still there.

Also the “bluff” sequence to show the aces doesn’t look convincing. It’s obvious that you are purposely hiding something. My two cents.

From the book: The Card Magic of Edward Marlo (L&L Publishing, 1993) I perform several effects that are very good.
Some of my favourites: Not all Psychological, Female, Houdini and Bess, Impromtu Invisible card routine.

I can recommend this book, here you have it as an ebook:

I must say that one of my favorites by Ed Marlo is 'Ten Years Ago'. I also like Leipzig Would Have Loved This. These are two that I like to perform. There are others, but most seem to already be on this list.
